some insurers do lay-up policies, though i'm not sure if this would cover it, they're usually for kit-car builds and stuff that is not used during winter etc. does strike me as a bit of a pain, but if it's not insured then just surrender the tax.

and @ pablopancake, ins companies already do that, its called a laid up policy ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) BUT it doesn't sound like that's going to be enough. A laid up policy will provide cover against loss/damage, not third party risks. Here: www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Motorinsurance/DG_067639It says ' Where a motor vehicle isnt used on a road or other public place, there’s no requirement to purchase insurance cover for 'on road risk' as long as a SORN declaration has been made.''. The assumption being that if a car isn't SORN, it's in use, so requires cover against third party risks. So it either has to be totally road legal, or SORN.

its a total joke, money making scheme. for example i have a trade policy which runs out on the 15th of jan, altho I'm 25 on 2nd of feb so will probably wait to get cheaper cover. i have 3 cars my beetle which is tax, no mot and off road for winter but still on my policy. my bmw on the road and used, and a td escort which i use for economy.
so come the end of my policy i will have to sorn these three cars, loosing a percentage of the tax refund and them after 3 weeks retax all the cars etc.
its stupid the sorn/tax refund wont even have been processed by that time. It wont stop uninsured drivers, as they wont care no more risk to them as if they get a tug its all goining to end up the same. Just means the dvla can catch more people out and fine them.
This change hasnt been advertised well has it i bet 95% of the general public have no idea of the change until they get a nice £60 pay up or else fine from the dvla.

From the DVLA missive justifying the new policy: Latest public estimates are that around 1.5 million of all UK motorists drive uninsured. These drivers cost the UK about £500 million annually, which adds up to an average cost of an extra £30 per car insurance policy. So how best to deal with that then? - I know let's pass legislation that penalises the innocent law abiding motorist ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

We are all becoming slaves to a system, i used to wish that i was born in like 300 years time i like the idea of the futre, but at this rate, the DVLA will be charging us for walking around in 500 years!!!!!

Not that I'm necesarily wanting to plays devils advocate here but I bet 95% of the general public have no idea of the change until they get a nice £60 pay up or else fine from the dvla. This won't have any impact on 99% of the general public. It won't even have much impact on most enthusiasts to be honest. The vast majority of the general public won't have a car that is MOT'd, Taxed but not insured. Yes it will be a PITA for some but it will also do something (maybe not that much but still something) about uninsured drivers.

what makes me laugh is that its to combat uninsured drivers, like a driver who drives uninsured is gonna bother with tax anyways

You could always sorn the car and cancel the policy before you sell it. which in itself is crazy, we all know a tax'd car is easier to sell.. how does the new buyer then purchase it, they would have to get the logbook (well green part upon purchase) but then wait for the postal service to send out an insurance certificate for the insurance and then visit the post office to tax it before driving away.. Means that last minute ebay, pick up next day purchase will be a thing of the past I can see some logic tho, if I had a car for sale, I wouldnt want to risk it getting stolen and having no cover on it I've always kept a car insured til the following day after its left my posession What a lot of people probably don't know is that you can now tax a car using either a home printed certificate or a fax copy. I've just done it but my insurance co didn't know it was possible, though they faxed me the paperwork anyway. My local post office issued the tax and confirmed the law had been changed earlier this year.

Does making murder illegal stop murderers killing people? No, it doesn't. So how will this stop uninsured drivers driving without insurance? It won't. But it will net the Govt lots of lovely cash in fines. As for this not affecting 99% of the general motoring public, I bet it's more than 1% of owners that are selling a car at any one time, and why would they want to insure a car that is no longer in their possession, yet on paper at the DVLA is still registered to them?
Oh and a laid up policy will not have your car show up on the MID database, as it's not a road risks policy so the MIB won't see it as having insurance........

the fact is it wont stop uninsured drivers, they get caught by anpr which will flag up the same after the change, it wont stop an uninsured driver borrowing a on the system car.
i cant believe anyone would not see it for what it is, hell tax will probably go up more to pay for the change. more cost, more hassle, poorer service (they cant even operate to a good standard as it is) and more fines for them to dish out.

I think you guys need to take a closer look at how it works if you think this is an insurance money making scam. However I make no effort to either defend or attack Doovla as their actions speak louder than any words.....

shlomping here is what you should do ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ... renew your policy on the given date, but change a detail (probably make it TPFT). then ring up a week later once you have turned 21 and change the details (so make it fully comp). Admiral will give you a quote on the up to date information and refund you the difference. providing you do this within two weeks of your renewal otherwise they will charge an admin fee around £25. ive pretty much just had the same thing with them, my renewal went through at £660, rang up a week later to amend some details and the new quote was £616, they gave me back the difference. Also they do do temp cover, but you have to have an existing policy with them and they allow 120 days of temporary cover on a second vehicle. Also the cost of this is the same for 1 week as it is a day, i pay £16 a week on my other car when i need it.
