I think GAP insurance only works where you're paying for a car on finance - let's say your mate writes his Fiesta off next year. It's worth £6k maybe, but he still owes £8k on the finance. The GAP insurance will cover the £2k difference between the cars value and what he owes. (At least, three of my friends have all bought new Fiestas on finance, and that's how it's been described to me...) Not the GAP invoice I have on my Skoda... It's a 3 year policy and basically means I get back the Invoiced value (what I paid for it) of my car in the event of a total loss claim.... they advise taking the insurance companies first offer and then they will make up the deficit... nothing to do with the Car Finance.... Wonder if I can buy that posthumously ?

So we're both right then? it appears so... I had realised it was a two-pronged thing... (it's been nearly 2 year since I took it out) and 104ZS... They were pretty much my words in the dealership when I bought the car..... sadly, I'm a realist, and it's a must with the way most car insurance companies like to shaft their customers.

I'm a realist, and it's a must with the way most car insurance companies like to shaft their customers. That's exactly it! I put the Golf on TPFT cover to save 50-odd quid this year, would I have saved all this hassle if I'd have been on Comprehensive cover with an agreed value?

I put the Golf on TPFT cover to save 50-odd quid this year, would I have saved all this hassle if I'd have been on Comprehensive cover with an agreed value? Probably not. I've got the ZS on fully comp. We don't have a garage so I couldn't get agreed value on the car as not having it garaged somehow "proves" that I don't value the car (eh) So if someone hits me then all the insurance company would see is a 25 year old peugeot worth maybe £50. Strangely if I had agreed value insurance then they probably wouldn't accept the agreed value anyway and revert to value that THEY think it's worth and expect me to agree to to that (hence agreed value - eh again) When our goof was clubbed up the rear by a lady in a 4x4, her insurance was bobbins, they dragged their feet loads and kept threatening to write our car off if we pushed to get it fixed quick (eh) Still they gave us a hire car (it was going to be a micra but I went ballistic and they gave us a vectra). Then they winged about us keeping it while they winged about fixing our car, and then left the damn thing outside our house for two weeks awaiting collection when we were finally done!

Just read start to finish and I'm apalled by the thieving scum that are insurance companies. They make their money on people who don't stand up for themselves or have a clue on the value of things; not surprising really on the whole they get money every year for doing curse word all. Anyway I'd meant to ask how are your injuries and are you going to be making a claim for personal injuries? My cousin got rear ended (ooh err) at about 2mp/fortnight in a car park and got £2k for claimed whiplash- she didn't even have it, you have doctors reports. Stick with it with the car, if they started at £250 and got up to £600 it just shows how much they were under-cutting you to begin with. DOn't agree to anything, make threats of ombudsman involvement and small claims courts until you get everything you want- including as mentioned before expenses for phone calls, the difference between cost of the Panda and a real hire car and anything else. or- say you'll accept £600 for the car but you want £50k compensation

Oh dear :S I wasn't inferring he should screw them over but if the injuries are ones which will be serious and they screw him over on the car then surely he should consider making a reasonable claim. I don't agree with the 'he looked at me funny, now I have terminal whiplash, lets sue' movement lately but serious claims are a different matter.

I just feel so depressed by the whole thing My back and neck are both still killing me, and I've had the mother of all headaches for a week now, and whilst I hate the idea of claiming for injury, even more so the idea of claiming for injury I don't have, but my solicitor tells me I am entitled to do so, so I will. If I get some money it's cool, but they way the rest is going I'm not counting on anything

Yeah, I know, I just wish it didn't make me feel like I'd become the sort of person I used to moan about so much "That's why we pay so much insurance" etc...

You know half of me thinks that claiming for "extras" like whiplash and similar (NOT that I think that's your case) is wrong, the other half thinks, well they don't play fair with us so...
Going from £250 to £600 in one day just proves they are yanking your chain. The system is set up to screw the average person who hates to make a fuss. They advertise like caring responsible companies and yet behave like robber barons with your rightful claims money. If they came clean and treated claimants properly then, yes all the fraudulant claim inflating would be wrong, but when they use every damn underhand tactic they can think off to screw you out of your claim, then f88k em!

Chevette on the road ftw! If the guy who's buying it on Wednesday doesn't show of messes me about then I might need to! Although I (well Judgie!) did fit a fresh set of 40 DRLA's on the fasty at the weekend, so that kinda works on the road! EDIT: I was actually thinking of a Polo GT or something as an intermediate car... any advice?

Hey Chris
The Polo's awesome, you'd really enjoy it! I do... It'll be fairly cheap to run/insure etc while you get everything sorted out. You know where I am if you need a moan.
