Is it 87 on an E plate? Tell him CAP say that it is worth £775 retail and if he doesn't give you that you'll send a copy of the print form this month's moniter to the ombudsman. Ask him what guide he's basing his valution on. This is CAP by the way if peeps don't know: www.cap.co.uk

Oh, and it might be worth reminding him the the FSA's definition of insurance is to put you "back in the same financial postition you were in before the accident" which means paying you the market value of the car, not what they think it's worth.
The nobbers.

Gutted to hear it's been written off, what a shame. It's my worst nightmare something like this happening to one of my cars as old cars are simply old cars to insurance people and thus worth very little. Good luck sorting it out. As mentioned, get looking through the classifieds of the Golf+ and PVW for comparable cars. I'm sure a well looked after one for sale in there would fetch £1000+

I was hoping someone here would have a subscription When I asked him what he was basing his valuation on he said "erm... Autotrader" to which I referred him to PVW and Golf+ suggesting that if he put a 1 in front of the figure he might be a bit closer... He seemed a reasonably nice chap after I'd managed to convince him I knew what I was talking about, dropped "the local club" and "enthusiasts publication" a few times and he seemed to soften a little bit... believe it or not although he works in Milton Keynes he lives in Redditch so he could even come see it but "it's not my job" ...

Good advice off stiglet there, keep in touch with em. This situation is a PITA.
I think about £250 was their first bid on my XR2, eventually in all fairness i got more than the rotbox was worth. Could of spent the money on massages and counselling afterwards! LOL They wound me up no end.
Good luck, tell em what you want.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Cheers Matt, I got it. I didn't realise 1987 was the First year for the 16v... I guess mine being a March car means it was even more rare.
I wonder if might have even been the first car in the country or anything? Not that it matters now!

Hehe... I so nearly lost my rag with him when he said 250 quid...
Is CAP generally said as just Cap or spelt out C.A.P? I don't wanna sound like I'm a keyboard expert when I speak to this fella...

Generally said Cap, like the hat. Before it was on a CD it used to come in a black book so it's sometimes called just "black book" but most people say cap.
If I have to ask anyone where my Glasses is to get the reply "I thought you had contacts" again in my entire life I will scream...
BTW, the Glasses guide I get doesn't go far enough back to cover your Goof.

Does anyone know if using the Legal Advice provided by my insurance cover to make my personal injury claim will loose me my NCB ?

Does anyone know if using the Legal Advice provided by my insurance cover to make my personal injury claim will loose me my NCB ? No, AFAIK. Think that's usually a separate policy. Give them a call and ask. In any case, the accident wasn't your fault so you wouldn't lose NCB anyway.

No, AFAIK. Think that's usually a separate policy. Give them a call and ask. In any case, the accident wasn't your fault so you wouldn't lose NCB anyway. Correctamundo. The legal insurance people should be there to fight the other driver's insurance company on your behalf. I used it once and it got me out of a very tight spot!

Got a letter today (after I'd got home from work and the insurance company had closed ) saying they were going to move my car to a safe and secure location and that I should forward my insurance certificate, keys, v5 etc to them! Surely they're not allowed to do that? The car still belongs to me right? Until I accept the settlement the car is my property, surely moving my car wihout my permission is theft! I didn't get the letter till everyone involoved is closed for the night, but I'll be calling at 8am tomorrow morning but how do I stand legally on this if the car has already been moved? Can I sue them for stealing my car? Cheeky abstards! GRRRR I HATE INSURANCE COMANIES! Sorry, I'm proper mad now...

i can understand why they are so eager to get it off you, being a cat-b write off. but still, thats a bit harsh. i think you can expect a fight to get what you want, they always do this. you just have to keep nagging them and eventually they'll give in. they just intentinally make it hard and awquard to try and put people off, try and make more money out of them. you have every right to argue till you get exactly what its worth, no haggling or bargaining. don't budge an inch!!! eventually they have to give in. i was with angel assistance and leach solicitors with my claim, they were actually quite good. are you with adrian flux insurance? anywayz, hope it goes well...good luck dude!!

you need only two things in life: WD40 and duck tape. if it moves and it shouldn't use the duck tape, if it doesn't move but should then use the WD40. Genius!

Surely they're not allowed to do that? The car still belongs to me right? Until I accept the settlement the car is my property, surely moving my car wihout my permission is theft! I refer you to my earlier post - Do not allow the car to be taken to an approved repairer (if you do that you have lost) I'll add IT IS STILL YOUR CAR untill you have recieved settlement but they won't normally ask they'll tell and normally too late for you to do anything and frequently send out cheques before financial compensation has been agreed. More to the point I am sure there are some personal effects still in the car - maps tapes/CD's etc which you are entitled to remove before you accept their settlement I didn't get the letter till everyone involoved is closed for the night, but I'll be calling at 8am tomorrow morning but how do I stand legally on this if the car has already been moved? Can I sue them for stealing my car? Cheeky abstards! GRRRR I HATE INSURANCE COMANIES! Sorry, I'm proper mad now... Wherever it is will be clocking up charges for storage and it's not cheap - thats why they will want to get it out of there and to a scrapyard or disposal auction asap
