So yesterday I was feeling mildly horny about Avenger's, in particular Avenger wagons. So after a brief scuttle about I came across the avenger & sunbeam owners club forum... I sign up hoping to get a glimpse of some tasty rootes goodness inside.... But oh-no! I have to have my application 'approved'. This morning I get this fella sending me a mail asking me for my 'club membership number', and once I've given that, access will be granted. So I basically have to pay to have a look at this website, then? Are other 'owners club' sites like this? And WHY? Surely it only serves to drive potential disciples away from your fold. Wierdness. To cheer up this glooomy thread, SHOW ME YOUR AVENGER PICS!!!! I'll start the ball rolling with this, which has caused me to spill my onken.

Conversely the arguement goes - why provide a resource to people who do not pay for it?
The MMA of which I am a member provides a forum which has public access to the classifieds as read only (IIRC) and a couple of the sectonsmight be either read only or public access, but I don't recall. The bulk of the tech section etc. is all members only and you can't even read it unless you paid up subs to the club.
Seeems like the obvious compromise.
The NSRA forum has been talking about going "members only" for years. Usually due to trouble makers registering.
I also recall I tried to join the J Body owners forum on the web but got rejected because I didn;t actually own one! LOL.

Since joining here and other places I've realised it not owning or being a member or even having a finished article of a project, but enthisiasm and interest and my fleet has doubled, due to getting more involved and more interested. but paying to go in turns me off. theres still stuff on the sierra club i can't see not bothered tho. I'll join up to some of the support clubs when i can afford to. Love the picture tho.

Some people/groups are just anal. When I was looking for a car I emailed a high up bloke in the Morris Marina club if he knew of any cars for sale. He said yes but would only tell me if i became a paid up member of the club. So, he wanted me to become a paid up member before actualy owning a Marina and not even knowing if i would buy one.

this whole debate of free or pay has/is/was going on at the impclub forum, and its causing some big aggro.basically paying members are objecting to non members using the facilities for free, and the non members are creating about having to pay.its a no win situation in my book, someone somewhere is gonna get peed off. btw can anyone find a pic of a blue avenger 4dr saloon (neptune) it was my first ever car and i get a it sentimental about not having taken a pic of it.

autobahnstormers club also springs to mind. i don't fancy stumping 30 odd quid only to find out my car isnt eligable(sp) cos it aint a 6 cylinder even tho its rarer thn most of the gm barges on there.

The Mercedes Club was like that - I was a member for a couple of years before RR was born. I think the difference is that (in the case of the MBC), the forum was an additional resource, and not the main thrust of the club. There were events, a glossy mag every month, and a few penguin-suit bashes where people sat around the table swilling wine and talking about their country pile. Not my cup of tea at all and in the end I decided not to bother any more (they didn't "get" the whole modding thing either ) Paying to join a forum isn't really what I think the internet is all about - I see it mostly as a free resource of information. That said, seeing the amount of work HoTWire has put into this site for free wouldn't make me feel that bad if I did have to subscribe - if, say, it would mean that or the forum not continuing

No wonder its quiet, getting people interested in less obvious cars cant be easy, specially if they have to know how to use a computer too!
Hide features if need be but turning em away at the door is not good.

There's definitely a case for paying for content on an owner's club site, previously a club membership would usually be joined by a newsletter, ads for 'favoured' garages, classifieds, advice, meetings, parts etc. Now all of those things are available freely on various forums and websites - you can't blame the owner's clubs for trying to combine both in order to survive.
That Avenger wagon is fantastic by the way, is it real? (door-handle shaving is too easy on photoshop!) If that's an actual car then the owner should've have found us by now!

the AROC (alfa) club website is like that - but you get lots of access to other info, apart from the forum - which is members only. www.aroc-uk.com

Nothing really to add about whether forums like that should be paying or not, but it's a good excuse to post a pic of my dad's Avenger brand new in '72.

Only in some one make clubs - the Midget & Sprite Club is full of modified cars, and last year had a car on their stand at the Ally Pally whose owner wasn't even a member at the time (he is now though)!

In my experiance the ASOC isn't against modified cars, the club has quite a varity of cars and mods.
