As ever, this is all intellectual for now, but I've had a slight urge for a mk5 cortina for years and lately they are "maturing" and I'm really considering one. They aren't getting any cheaper, either. I also really like the font the speedo is written in. Now, what I know about them is "not a huge amount" but they mostly come with pintos which aren't very fast, and the trailing arm bushes need replacing on an hourly basis or they will drive like a bendy bus. These things I can deal with. I would want to put a 5 speed and a 24v cosworth engine in after hearing one once, and seeing one propel a capri quite nicely. I can deal with the wires, but what (probably obscure) gearbox and prop would I need? What upsettingly expensive or hard to find parts would I have to use? I basically want this: ![](http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/photos-audlem-06/2.jpg) But with power. and a nice stereo. I would probably lower it until it was undriveable, also. More cortinas, because they are cool: ![](http://www.clubtaunus.com.ar/En_el_Mundo/Cortina_Tuning.jpg) ![](http://static.flickr.com/109/290839433_ccd7c6c7e2.jpg) ![](http://www.clubtaunus.com.ar/En_el_Mundo/Cortina_Interceptor.jpg)

Cheers topupposter, That was a good read! I was expecting it to just be more or less bolt in, ignoring the wiring. Bit more of a "project" than the engine swap I'd anticipated!

No you could get 2 doors. They're quite rare. They were used as mobility cars so most came as 1.6 auto's.
I love my Cortina and hopefully 2011 will be its year haha

*I types slow- in answer to cobblers /\ /\ /\* Which is pretty much why I'm going 2.0 pinto in my one. I know there are better engines to be had it's just that basic really appeals to me.
That said the 24 valver would be awsome, don't be put off it was just the wiring side that scared me and you have the confidence for that. That blue one looks nice and tidy too, do it ;D ;D ;D

If you start with a 2.3 or source 2.3 engine mounts and rad it pretty much is bolt in, a type 9 5 speed will bolt straight in with a capri gearbox mount turned round backwards, I went MT75 cos its stronger, lighter and I had one already.
24v is a great balance of power and economy, to be honest though if I was gonna do it again i'd be looking at an injected yank V8 of some sort, but then more power needs better suspension brakes and axle, the stock Cortina stuff can just about cope with 200bhp if your not a lunatic and have some road sense.
mine would spin the wheels in second in the dry without trying though, I had it going sideways in third gear at 70mph in the wet, but then I was running the 13's on pirelli P6's which are not exactly the grippiest things in the world, it handled alright though.
200bhp does not sound a lot these days, but the torque of the 24v from quite low down means you have lots of power whatever speed your going at, when it was released it had the most torque of any sub 3 litre N/A engine ever released.
The BOA was rated at 195bhp at 4,500rpm, and 203 ft/lb and its torque that makes a fast road car, from 50mph mine would out accelerate my mates 2 litre turbo Audi A4 while i was in 5th, even if he dropped his to 4th (6 speed box on his)

24v is a great engine for the Cortina. I've got plans for my engine conversion and it'll definitely be 6 cylindered and 24v'd maybe justnot a Cosworh ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
