Hi guys,
I helped my friend get a car over easter, its an early polo 1L
Now the car was immaculate not a spot of rust or scratches anywhere, the engine is quiet smooth and uses no oil or water. Now this is what she says is happeneing -
"The car is interesting actually...it's been playing up this week..really weird but keeps randomly just cutting out..the battery light flashes and when I re-start it's fine and continues to work as if nothing happened"
I'm thinking ignition, possibly the rotor arm?
Any help appreciated

:)Two common faults on old FWD dubs are a dodgy ignition switch,or fusebox. Could be anything though, difficult without seeing the car tbh.

A mate had this problem with his Polo, it was crud from the fuel tank getting pulled through to the carb and blocking the jets. Sometimes it would restart right away and sometimes it was call the AA time. There is no fuel filter as stock (or his had been removed LOL) so also try fitting a fuel filter.

If its not some electrics prob as already mentioned theres chance of this, the fuel tank fill pipe gets badly rotted under rear arch.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Obviously it is difficult to pin-point a problem without experiencing it first hand. Normally it seems obvious if the problem is ignition or fuel supply, i.e with a fuel supply problem the car can normally be kept running with a bit of spluttering, electrical problems tend to feel much more 'on-off'. I recently had very similar problems with the Derby - initially the car would run fine but as it got up to temperature it would start to miss & in quite a violent way, the engine would run over a few times without fireing before starting up fine again abiet with a backfire. These symptoms indicated to me that it was an ignition problem, indeed I changed the ignition leads, condensor, points & finally the coil - it was the later which was problem part. I did try the checks as indicated in the Haynes manual but as electrical problems are normally intermittent they did not show up any problems. Hope the above gives you some ideas - BTW have you any pictures of the car concerned, would be nice to see it

cheers guys as soon as i get back home ill get some photos! Its a strange car, its obviously been owned by a rich old person and maintained no expense spared. 47K from new and i can totally belive it, even under the arches is nice and clean, i swear that its 47K dry miles.
Well it has a new fuel tank and a fuel filter, but if the old one had rusted through then all sorts of curse word could be lurking in the carb. But still the way she says its stops and goes again i think it could be ignition.
cheers for your help guys

My 1.3 did this. My g/f's dad blasted the carb out with an airline and I replaced the fuel filter and HT leads and it cured it.

As above, I'd check all the ignition parts and also blow the carb's main jet out and drain the float chamber, it's a very simple setup to work on. Also worth checking is the connection to the alternator. On my old Polo the alternator connection plug would occasionally pop out of it's socket and give some strange symptoms, dash lights flashing, gauges go haywire, car sometimes stalls etc - quite odd. Pics would be nice, sounds well looked after!
