I am looking to freshen the engine and bay in my ascona, it needs a bit of a make over as it was converted 6 years ago and it shows, rubbed through wiring, poor fuel consumption, rough running, rusty bits...blah blah blah..you get the idea So for me the best idea would be to rip it all out and start from fresh, but i cant decide which route to go down The budget is around a £1000+ I could spend all the money on the current engine, re-build, cams, head polishing, ecu re-map.. get it close to 190hp ish but id soon get bored of that.. i really need a turbo in my life.. the noise.. the power.. turbo it with a stand alone ecu, megasquirt or similar, aftermarket manifold and t28 turbo could come within budget..? Or just buy a c20let.. but these are getting rare and demand high prices,, maybe more than my budget can stretch to.. Any ideas or help would be most appreciated.. or am i shooting way above my budget..!?

ca18det's are pretty cheap, even a s13 mot fail would be way less than 1k and it'd have all the wiring, gearbox, prop etc. my 2 cents

For a grand you could get a very well looked after Saab9000 with a B205/235 (2.0/2.3) lump in very good order. It's turbo'd straight out of the box, massively tunable (proven over 400bhp on the standard internals) and it'll come with the factory management - Trionic5, very very remap friendly) - so you won't need the expense of MS etc. Plus, by the time you've sold the other bits of 9000 you don't need, the running engine will be free, and there's not extra cost in self-turboing a.n.other engine.

Omega v6? Plenty of them filling out scrapyards now. Has rwd box already on it! Quite a short, light engine so wouldn't mess the handling up like a big V8 made out of pig iron would! Doesn't pop and whiz like a turbo but has a nice V6 roar to it even when standard. If you search about a bit you could find the 3 litre version, nice!

Not all V8's are heavy and lazy, they often just feel that way 'cos they are in lardy card with tall gearing and auto boxes, no one ever said an AC Cobra or TVR was a lazy drive and modern ally V8's are not that heavy compared to an iron turbo 4 pot.

C20LET's aren't that rare and the common price seems to be £1000 have a look on some vauxhall forums (migweb/png/vauxsport)

4 litre jag straight 6? the AJ16 is bullet proof, makes over 250bhp and you can buy a whole car for 300 quid, you can find manual ones as well, they weigh about 230kgs i think, so not super heavy be an unusual conversion.

Put that Lexus V8 into a lighter car and put in some short diff gears and then see how lazy it is. LS400s apparently come with a 3.26:1 final drive, so a set of 4.11s should wake it up. They would be happier at revs than a traditional small-block as well.

Saab lump every time for me,its what my chevette estate is getting.Although your xe shouldent be running that badly. In my cav i get 35mpg to 45mpg depending how i drive.Have you got the lambda sensor connected? Any fault codes? They`re a brilliant engine so think yours just needs alittle looking after. Or turn your xe into a let.

Does this mean that a RWD Vauxhall box will bolt onto a Saab engine? Or if not, are there any that are a direct bolt on without having to have an adaptor plate made?

another saab vote from me . buy a cheap lpt 2.0 9000 and keep the engine and loom ecu etc . keep the speedo unit and the valve from the evap canister and the stock management will work properly . the t25 will make 250 hp with a better downpipe and from there on its just a matter of how much power you want to make . i fitted a holset hx35 to mine with a set of 630cc injectors a 3 bar map sensor and a set of volvo t5 valve springs and it made 510hp with no drama. the 204block can cope with 600hp and the saab forums have plenty of support for home tuners.
i paid £300 for my 9000 with one owner and 70k on the clock .a good donor would be a 2.3 aero as thet have the tdo4 and with a 3" downpipe you will be near to 300hp with a re map , as you don't need the gearbox an auto aero will be a lot cheaper and they occasionally come up with auto box issues for a few hundred quid .
there is an ascona in greece with a saab lump in and I'm sure he has a buils thread on uk saabs .

Think the saab lumps made between 1994-1998 will bolt straight upto the saab lump. Ive got a 1997 2.3 block with a omega box bolted on with no problems but thats as far as ive got.
