Wire it through a relay? The problem will be the switch can't flow enough current for the fan, and if you have been doing it'll probably be knackered... 4 connections on the relay, forget the rest just look at the relay in the diagram and hook the thermo switch up to the #86 terminal: Or wire it up like the diagram - it' not a bad plan... Oh forget the part numebrs too a 30A automotive relay is perfectly man enough for the job adn costs about £2.50

Sorry mate, I don't have a diagram or a relay for it! At the moment I have
Electric fan - with its two wires Electric fan wired to ACC power Audi 100 rad Audi 100 rad thermo switch (at the bottom of the rad)
It would be easiest if I could get a direct replacement for the switch for one that CAN handle 12v - whats the point in it not? surely it would be easier and cheaper or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Oh just spotted the diagram it didnt load first time. So is this the only way then? You cant get a replacement switch that can handle 12v?

I imagine it's not the 12V that's the problem, the fan will draw something like 16A or more, the little contacts int he switch will burn out in no time.
Relays have nice big contacts to cope with these big currents, also they are cheaper then thermo switches!
Relay is the way forward, also watch your wiring the fan will draw loads of power so will cook small wires in no time (They will get warm and burn out if your unlucky!)
Would take a sparky about 20 mins to fit, wiring, a relay and fuse - if your near Preston I'll do it...

Oh I see, worried me about the wires now! Where abouts should I put an online fuse in and what ampage to make sure nothing burns? Thanks a lot for the offer of fitting, not actually that far way to be honest (Wirral) but I reckon a few mugs of tea and should see ms through with a bit of guidance!

late mk2 and mk3 polos (from 1985 to 1994) have M22 x 1.5mm fan switches. they have single speed and 2 speed versions, but they run the fans directly without relays.

I've bought a universal m22 fan switch at the local auto parts store, the people behind the counter said it wouldn't need a relay. Haven't tried it yet though. Seen quite a few wired like that to be honest though.
Try boiling it and measure it with a multimeter.

If it's the same, I have a working fan switch from a Vauxhall rad you can have. It's Bosch, so it should be the same. It's a two speed one, so it has three pins. I have the same problem, I changed the loom and it's incompatible with some things in the car - the switch turns the fan on when you rest it on the exhaust manifold and if you bridge the connectors, but doesn't otherwise. Don't suppose it matters in this weather.
