Hello again all, This is my daily driver Polo GT, sold my plush Audi 80 TDi for this! Had a few polos and golfs etc, and love breadvans so i snapped this one up for £250.00. As bought: Ran it on odd steelies for months, at least they had a little bit of tread! Done the headgasket, amongst other jobs. Runs sweet as a nut even with 165,000 miles on the clock! Lowered it, stripped the back out, painted some VW monreals and put new tyres on. It went through an MOT first time which astonished me. Plans, well i've been primising myself a matte paintjob for years so gona do that, not decided on colour yet. The front needs to come a bit lower and it needs a de-cat / air filter / chip to make it a bit nippier. Aside from that, just enjoy using it daily!! Joe

nice, gt breadys are the dogs, personally, as much as i like matt cars, i wouldnt do it on this one, not seen may GT breadys in that colour. the reg on it looks like it could have been a milton keynes car (vw uk hQ) as they all ended with that kind of reg, GNH.

I know, i do like the colour of it and it isnt commonly seen on GT breadvans. BUT, it has a white door and plenty of rust / dents dotted around, meaning ill have to paint it all in the original colour if i want it looking straight / all the same colour! Like i say, every car i buy i promise myself a matte paintjob, but i never end up doing it becasue i like original paint!!
You're right, a lot of GTs have the GNH number plate, both me and my brother have had em in the past!
Forgot to say this one has no sunroof, which is a bonus :-D

GT breadvans are pretty few and far between these days. I'm one of the few that actually prefers the mk2/3 breadvan shape over the Coupe, though IMO you can't beat a mk2 Polo for clean lines. Personally, I think it would be much nicer if this were tidied up and resprayed in the original colour. The Montreals are nice wheels and really suit it too. Looks like it needs a fair bit of TLC, but I reckon it'd be worth it. Good luck with it. BTW, how's the battery tray? Wet feet?

GT breadvans are the best daily rides! I use mine every day too and it has never let me down.
Keep the colour and replace the left door! Mine was much more rusty than yours and still has many more dents. After a small crash which made me to swap the left wing I decided to start to colour it, but yours is too mint to do it. Even in Germany the GT breadvans are rare!

Cheers Guys! Well you've got me thinking now!
The main problem is that there was an awkward deep dent adjacent to the passenger door when i got it. This has been pushed out and is currently residing in red oxide, so if i got a correctly colour door i would probably need to paint the rear quarter as well. Not to mention the boot lid has rotted through in parts (as they do). Ill have t think about it!
Battery tray was absolutely shot when i bought it! The worst i've ever seen. Luckily me brothers a good fabricator so he got it all welded up :-)

No real updates on the polo, it just keeps plodding on taking me to work and wherever else i need to go. Current spec: - Lowered 60/40 on a cheapo TA-Technix kit - Going to go 15mm more on the front though - New TCA's, polybushed anti roll bar bushes - Powerflex bump stops (No crashing!) - De-cat pipe - 4 Branch manifold - Poloace Chip - VW Montreal wheels 14 x 6" with 165 / 60 / 14 tyres - Stripped out interior - modest sound system Recent pic: Plans - - Drop the front slightly - Decent air filter - Anyone got a K & N panel filter for sale? - General maintenance work - Different seats - Corrado / scirocco items most likely - Paintwork - still undecided which way i'm going to go with this, OEM or custom? Thanks for reading! Joe

I am hugely jealous! I'd love another Squareback especially a GT. Might be time to fix the Golf up a bit and punt it on for one!
I definitely think you need to keep it the original colour!

Cheers man, they are a good car, i love mine to pieces.
Really cant make my mind up about what colour i want to go. Every panel needs either repair or replacement, so it needs a full hit of paint. I'm wayyy to much of a skinflint to pay out for an expensive paint job, and although i have friends who are painters, I'm not entirely sure i'd get the finish i want if it's staying shiny (would have to do it on the cheap, probably prepping it outside).
Alternatively, and controversially, i might just keep it as is but make sure it doesnt rust any more. I think it might pull the "shed-look" off quite well if i get it sitting a bit better!

Big fan of the car, sounds tho it runs great, so that's the main thing!
I'm going to Matt Red my van in the summer, so, contrary to everyone else so far i think you should deffo matt it up! Maybe black or a ultramarine blue!!!
Just to even up the light and dark opinions!

Hi all, Well, no massive update once more. I managed to purchase a correctly coloured n/s door, which completely transformed the look of the car as you can imagine. Not going to bother painting the car fully now. The lower half does have a few scabs etc which i will "blow in" before winter sets in. The underside of the car has already been waxoiled. I picked up some corrado seats for it, which are AWESOME. Possible the best modification you can do to these, it is that much of an improvement to the comfort and driving position. This is pretty much the most reliable car i have ever owned. I havent had to even look at the engine compartment in months for any reason other than to check it over. It just keeps battling on. We embarked on a 750 mile roadtrip last week to Devon, and it got us down and around there without hitch. 5 hour motorway journeys in comfort, fully, FULLY, laden!!! Go on then, have a collection of recent pics: All the best, Joe

Bread Van + Camping = Winning It is indeed a good formula!! The weather was lovely as well when we went, we stayed at a place on the south coast called Beer for a couple of days, on a campsite overlooking the sea. Beautiful. Picking another GT up on Saturday, not sure what i'm going to do with it yet. This one's a coupe and looks very tidy. Needs the usual head gasket and a bit of tlc by the looks of things. Might try and swap it for a mk2 breadvan and commence with a TD conversion.......... Joe

So, i picked another GT up....it's in lovely condition considering it's 162,000 miles, and comes with a nice thick folder of receipts!! This is the only picture for now. Tucked it up in my garage on Saturday after driving it home 80 miles. It has the typical leaky head gasket so ill get that done, then i might just sell it on. I only really bought it as the guy was thinking of scrapping it (trader), so it just needed saving! Alternatively i might try and swap it for something older. Joe

Update: The red one was sold to a mate's girlfriend a while back. It needed a bit of work to get 100% but it really is a lovely example, i'm glad that it's gone to someone who will hopefully enjoy it and KEEP IT STANDARD (not many left in that condition). So onto my breadvan. Well the Cambelt snapped a few months ago on my way home from work! Totally out of the blue. So i had to get a couple of bent valves replaced and the head refurbished, then re-do the headgasket etc. Anyways it's been back on the road for a couple of months now and running fine with no problems. Finally managed to paint the o/s quarter this week - a mate did me a huge favour. He got the match perfect and did a real good job - especially Considering the patchwork quilt-like paint that this car has!! Pics: I really need a tailgate for the car now as mine rattles like mad and it's driving me insane. If anyone has one, preferably in the right colour (LA5T), then let me know. Or if you have one in the wrong colour but in good condition and fairly local to me, please let me know. I did THE heater modification a few weeks ago, just in time for the winter months. If you don't like the cold (like me) i'd recommend it, and it a doddle to do. Just a bit of cutting and blocking up holes etc. I have considered selling as of late for another diesel, but i can't bring myself to do it. As a matter of fact, i have actually considered putting this back on stock suspension and going the OEM route.........but that will take some thinking about. Car has now past 173k and is running well, even goes a bit better than before after the head was refurbished when the cambelt snapped. Thanks for reading, Joe
