I'm about to come into possesion of a 1.1 Rover Metro 96' 2 door. Its in good order except a water pump. But thats beside the point.
I happen to be looking for a track car, i wsa going to get a second crx but this thing might do. What I need to know though is what to do about the engine. A 1.1 is hardly track car potential.
So, eh..anyone wanna help a noob out?

Thats what I'm told. But how much works gonna be involved in dropping a 1.8vvc(or other) in? Iv not too much experience in this field (but i can get good help when it gets to the nitty gritty of it) Ill need an engine, obviously. Gearbox? Loom?

I have an article on this - I'll dig it up. From what my vague memory on this subject remembers, you shouldn't really need anything barring the engine - harness & ECU will plug and play, use the standard radiator, ancilleries, mount the existing gearbox to the engine..... Might be wrong about the gearbox bit but if I find the article, I'll stick it up

If I was you I would just put the 1.4 16V K series in to start with. As far as I know all the 16v`s have 100bhp (but I could be wrong on this point)and they make a fairly rapid little car. Should be able to get a rover 214 (honda concerto shape 90-95) for practically nothing and get the engine from that to put in. They are bit more reliable and can take a bit more abuse than the bigger engined K`s. So you don't have to worry about the thermal shock/head gasket/liner problems that they suffer from.

Used to have the 416GSI model. The 1.6 used to fly, in a Metro it should give you a very rapid car. You may be able to get hold of a rotten twincam model, obviously the guys on here know far more than i do as to whether it will fit ok. Will it?

I might pick up a 416GTI (I think???) at some point for a laff. Might look into these 416GSI's too then in that case! It's just for a streetable runaround

The 'old' (G-M reg) 416 GTi's have a honda 1.6 TC engine of 130 bhp. They are a fast, discreet car with a driving position which is nigh-on perfect, i'd love a nice one. In fact they are a latter-day Dolomite if you ask me. I think it would be a proper war to put one of these engines in a Metro tho.
For the Metro you need a K-series twincam in 1.4/1.6/1.8 flavours, if you get a 214 to pillage make sure its the MPi one not the SPi otherwise you're gonna curse word on your own doorstep to the tune of about 12 bhp (over 10%).

Multi point injection or Single point injection. Ah makes sense, theres plenty of old rovers knocking about so i should be able to find one with MPI

There was an article in PPC about a year ago on fitting K-series engines to minis, you oughta read that, the wiring will be your biggest headache I think. After a certain point these rovers have a nightmarish immobiliser system within the ECU, you don't want to get bogged down in deciphering that.
I presume your metro has a carb? If so the wiring is defo not 'plug and play' so beware.

1.8 k series will go in pretty straight forward. Only problem is the VVC system which isn't easy to make work in the metro (I don't no why). For information try metropower.co.uk.

Car to look up is the Reyland Metro that Martin Hadland has built, very very fast little track car.

Get it done, Rover k-Series engines kick ass, forget the bad press its all b*llox... As long as the last time the gasket was done it had the plastic dowels replaced with metal ones you'll have a good engine. I've got an R-reg 416 as a daily driver and although the car itself it quite frankly shocking the engine pulls in every gear right up to 7.5k. This is made more entertaining cause its got a close ratio metro box on it.
As for making sure you've got all the stuff, mine was mot'd for a year and i paid £300 for it, so dodgy complete cars are gonna be pennies!
