This is in the ebay thread is it not?
Good purchase if you get it, be prepaired for it to be pretty rusty though. Sierras love a sill IIRC. Reanimation is our resident sierra expert though so he'll probably have all your answers.

wheelarches look pretty decent which is a good start.
Is it just me or do these 3-door jobs seem to be less rot-prone than say an E-reg 5-door? Are they all built in the same factory?

Maybe the 3 doors just had an easier life. I mean, to survive this long most of them probably had one old boy owner and regular garage pampering from new. Either that or the people who bought them knew they were onto a good thing and started looking after them about the same time as the cosworth came out.

Ideally id like to view the car first but its all the way up in Aberdeen. I'm not expecting a minter. Anyone any idea of what a car like this is worth?

aberdeen? odd... there was a car identical to that near me, in Mansfield - same colour, same style sticker in the window, same wheels. And that car in the pics is a local registration to me.
How long has the guy had it? be a bit worried if he's bought it and selling it straight on!

Three-doors certainly don't seem to rust as badly as five-doors and Sapphires. Don't know where they were built, but as a rule of thumb, with later ones Triplex windows = rusty shell, Sekurit windows = less rusty shell.
Rear arches, the rear parts of the sill and inner sill are usually worst, the sills aren't too tricky to sort but the arches aren't a nice job (plenty of scope to distort the rear quarter panel!) Even if a little grot has appeared, a good dosing with Waxoyl will stave it off for a good while (nine years so far on my '88!)
Tops of the inner wings between the strut tower and bulkhead are occasionally rusty, as are the parts of the floor where it's reinforced for the front seat mounts. Also had a couple where the inner skin of the floor around the transmission tunnel needs cutting out and replacing - but you won't find that without the carpets out! It's not often serious. Personally six out of the seven Sierras I've had (plus one hopefully arriving this week) haven't been that rusty elsewhere underneath. It's nearly always the places already mentioned, plus door bottoms and the bottoms of the wings.
From the pics it certainly looks good!
If it doesn't have 'em, bigger front brakes from a later 2.0 or XR are a bolt-on swap as is the disc brake equipped rear beam / diif assembly, swap in the bigger servo and master cylinder too.
A roll cage would be infinitely cooler than rear seats!
As far as value, it's tricky to price. They tend to be £400+ when advertised, but on Ebay several haven't even sold for over £300.

How long has the guy had it? be a bit worried if he's bought it and selling it straight on! I think he mentioned he got it from a friend.... I don't remember him saying how long for but its a bit off puting if he's only had it for a short time and maybe isnt being entirely honest where he got it from. Heres the original ebay link - cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4629123992&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1Its quite vague and i see no mention of any bad points which at least is usually a sign of an honest seller. Too many people tend not to mention important things like rust etc But i still thing it looks very tasty!!

This is in the ebay thread is it not? Reanimation is our resident sierra expert though so he'll probably have all your answers. Thank you kind sir, Jonny has just proved he knows a bit more though! I think as with any old Ford expect rust in all usual areas, sills wheel arches and front floor. Theres no sunroof so thats good too, it does look ok infact it looks nicer than the base models, from the picture, i'd have good poke about have an eye out for owt wierd, any dodgy mods and then only offer around £300. I don't know much about pinto's though and what to look for, have a go and see how it goes. retrorides.proboards29.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1142407656&page=42this is the second time it went on ebay and was advertised title wise quite bad. So he should take an offer. I have been lucky for mine and paid for its condition, however, rust bugs never sleep so it will get a strip down after bing on the road and/or get treated to some more waxoyl. These seem to be a bargain at the mo, more info. I was pleased to see Tony Cox's Drag car in PPC this month so thats worth a look.

He's asking £350, and it still needs tax (and seats) so i agree, offering him £300 would be reasonable. I just have a gut feeling theres something missing from that ad... As you say its not the best advert.

If your gut feeling is that something isnt quite right then walk away. There are plenty of other cars around, the amount of times i used to rush into buying something then bitterly regreted it......... To the majority, this car is a well used shed so unless somebody more enlightened is kicking down his door to buy it and you really fancy taking a punt go in with a "final offer" of 250 quid "take it or leave it" You may get it, there are loads of cars and not enough buyers.

I've read before that all sierra 3 door shells were made on a low volume production line in Belgium, which may account for them surviving the rust worm a bit better than standard Sierra's (I'm assuming low volume meant more time could be spent each one)
Granada rear seats will fit with minor mods giving a cheap leather rear seat option, then get the fronts recovered.
make sure the doors and door cards are in good condition, due to them being the same as the 3 door Cosworths they fetch mighty high prices second hand, saw a set of XR4i door cards go for £90 on the bay!! Oh, dash almost always split on early sierra's, use as a haggling point then just fit a dash from a Mk2 Sierra which don't split as often, look almost the same bar a couple of perforated air vents and bolt straight in.
Granada LSD diffs fit with minor mods meaning you don't have to pay the extortionate amounts wanted for Cossy ones.
Sierra's may have been a radical departure in terms of style when new, but they were built in the best tradition of Fords part bin frenzy, meaning 20 years later finding bits can be quite financially painless with a bit of knowledge.
Buy it, cherish it, grab a rotten 2.0 I4 DOHC sierra, strip box, crossmember and propshaft, fit to your 3 door with a Mk5 RS2000 engine (I4 and RS2000 blocks are exactly the same) for something different.

Go have a look. It looks ok. If the mods have been done properly, it should be fine. look out for rust, keep ya wits about you, get a gut feeling. if all works been done well, it would be a an ideal rwd retro ride straight from the tin; already lowered with a nice grill/lights and engine modes to make it go a bit. its got MOT too! What else could you get for that?

I'l be going to see it this week, my gut feeling could be wrong, i guess the best thing to do is check it out for real. Il keep yous posted once ive seen it. Cheers for the advice folks

How long has the guy had it? be a bit worried if he's bought it and selling it straight on! The guy said he got it from a friend in Norwich if thats near to Mansfield... Sadly, i found out the 1600cc engine in it used to be a 1300cc so it classses as a modification which is bumping the insurance right up over what i can afford. It doesnt help I'm young and have no claims etc. Otherwise this car looks like a good un, spoke to the seller again today, he assures its in excellent order, no rust on the doors and sills, so if anyones interested they should contact him
