This was the reponse I got when I asked for a K&N air filter for a 1.5 inch SU carurettor and Motorworld Doncaster
I thought the guy (about 20) was joking at first, but sadly not!! bless him..
He asked what it did, where it went, and what the car was, I just got a confussed look off him and each answer, and he didnt know what an Austin mini was, he said "don't you mean BMW mini?"
Its a sad thing when young lads don't know what a carb is...

It is sad, but given that he would have been about 3 when the last carburetted cars rolled off the production lines, I can't say it's hugely surprising.
That said, i would have thought that someone wrking in a car parts place would have at least a passing interest in cars and how they work.

Some of the younger lads at work didn't know what a lada was, and thought that Skoda's were invented in the late 90s.

My thoughts exactly! He look horrified when i said the car doesnt have a throttle body, and that the carb is an older version to it, its the only way i could explain it to him!! My favourite thing was when he said "so has does the ECU know how much fuel is going into the car?" << oh dear and again, another wierd look when I told him the car doesnt have one

When I was 16 I worked in a car spares place. I couldn't drive, didn't know much about car mechanics etc. I did know what a carb was, but as for advising customers on technical things, I wasn't much use.
I try not to be too harsh on such people now - everyone has to start somewhere, and let's face it those who have a real thorough knowledge of cars are often not standing behind tills, they're working on cars.
The old-fashioned motor factors with the knowledgeable shop keeper who can strip and rebuild an A-series in his sleep are mostly closed. It's unfortunate that that business model doesn't work any more. Shops which sell mostly ICE, Bl!NG RimZ and stick-on tat stay trading, and the need for knowledgeable (and more expensive) staff is just not there.
It's sad, but just the way of the world.

Same as I gave my friend a lift and when I pulled out the choke to start, she asked why I was opening the bonnet. ;D I do wonder. Frequently.

My favourite thing was when he said "so has does the ECU know how much fuel is going into the car?" << oh dear and again, another wierd look when I told him the car doesnt have one I'm reasonably impressed he knew what the ECU should be doing actually! A mate and me and two girls took my E28 525 on a long drive on Friday night - the girl sitting in the front was incredulous that the car had a radio (mp3 cd player in fact) and electric windows, BRAKES!, basically anything more than a bicycle and she was shocked. It took her about 3 hours before she asked "is this automatic?". Wanted to punch her in the teeth. Put her in the back seat to leave me alone... and then she discovered the armrests and off it went again. Shes only like 2 years younger than me - this generation is ridiculous. Everyone should learn to drive in a Morris Minor or somesuch before being allowed into the civilised world.

Ive had some great reaction from using the choke in the past, but nothing compares to the manual in-dash pump for the washers in my old 1972 Maxi. ''What the F##K is that!?!'' was commonplace.

The best reactions from people was when you took people out in the mk2 Zodiac. Sitting down, you can see the thought processes as they look around... 'Um. No gear stick? Big shiny thing on steering wheel. Speedo is sideways. Where's the mirrors? Handbrake? Seatbelts...oh..no...does..not..compute...what..on...earth...will...I...do,..without..that? ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ' And I'm just like, 8-track player and an ashtray. Let's be honest, what more kit do you want?

generational sadly, you would have thought with all their internet knowledge and searching they'd at least know that there was something called an Austin Mini. Even if he'd said do you mean Rover Mini that'd be acceptable but to not even acknowledge the existance of a car that was revolutionary, British and sold in millions and is iconic, is, frankly, very poor.
