More bits. This is a turbo S clutch kit- I need the clutch to take the extra hp , the new fork is wider to fit over the bigger relese bearing. The flywheel is larger in diameter than the N/a this is needed for the bigger clutch. Also there are more timing teeth, so this is needed to use turbo managment and the bell housing is larger also. Also have a mercedes sprinter intercooler, not sure if I'm using it yet. First of the bling bits ! aqua blasted my inlet and throttle body (all was stripped and reassembled) Before- After- And stuck the sump in the degreser tank. Also I have removed the blanking plug form the balance shaft case and tried the turbo oil feed banjo bolt in it, whey... Plan of action... 1. Remove head - inspect bores (if block is FKD dave has a good spare) 2. Remove bottom end from car, fit clutch and pistons using original rods and bearings (disturb less as possible) refit bottom end. 3. Buy headgasget, refit head & manifolds fuel rail ect (and exhaust if it has turned up ) 4. By this time I should have the cash to collect the remaining parts which are all small jobs, engine loom & ECUs, j pipe and AFM maybe cooler and pipes if I don't use the one I have.

Good progress Gav. The cam box bolts are tight! Did you beat them first? I found that helped. If you have rounded one of the heads you could try persuading a larger torx socket in to the hole instead of resorting to drilling straight away?

Ha, i beat them, tightend the ones either side if it, cant bash a torx in there, the problem is a piecs of allen key is in the bolt head, thats what I'm drilling. Magnet wont do it. Also you will notice in the pics that i have chopped the lamp washer hoses, i could have got them off but the water smelled like cat sh1t so i cut and ran!

I removed the head last night, to reveal....the best 944 block ive ever seen - no visable wear! I then looked at the grouping on the block, to find its a group 1 block which is what the turbo blocks were. I don't think the block groupings matter after 120000 miles but its got to be a bonus. Also I was thinking about getting a turbo camshaft but after some reading it seems the later (86 on) n/a camshaft is often used as an upgrade on the turbo engine. The only mechanical difference between this and a genuine 951- sodium filled exhaust valves Forged rods Gearbox Rear roll bar Only the front bumper and clocks tell it apart. I didnt set out to build a 944 turbo, but its been the most cost effective way to gradualy upgrade. Bad news is the price of a gasget set.

After some searching when I rebuilt mine I found Porsche themselves to be the best value on the gaskets as their sets include all the gaskets and O rings you will need instead of just the major ones!

Thanks a lot guys! I have bought a good used exhaust, its a full system with the waste pipe fitted, should save a lot of hassle during the build, I can mod it later.. I said no blingy exhausts, but this has a blingy tail pipe..

Great work as always . Is that a rubber centred clutch? I would splash out a bit there and put a spring/solid centred clutch in now in your position considering they can be a ballache to change in addition to causing some rather hideous shaking around town once they warm up .

That is the spring centre clutch, was not cheap! the turbos never had the rubber one fitted. Its only ever getting 1 clutch, worst job on the car.

This took longer than I wanted it to, hence missing the northampton meet last night Got it out in the end, (single gararge not ideal) Clutch off,now to fit fly/pistons/clutch/sump. Thats not an oil leak btw, its spilled oil.

So it is sprung centred (me and my crappy tinterweb). No doubt you are eagerly awaiting the arrival and several more ponies under the bonnet

Bottom end now built . sump/bellhousing back on, I just need to get it back in the car and its all pleasant from there. The turbo came with 2 types of conrod but not cast. I was about to buy a set of turbo forged when I saw this- www.roguetuning.com/944na_internals_-_the_limit Which stated @ 350hp /18psi of boost for 9 months the only part which wasnt up to the task was the n/a pistons - rods ok. I'm not going to run that much boost or power.

Thanks again! The price of all the exhaust gasgets came to more than a Lloyds director xmas bonus, so I bought a sheet of exhaust gasget material, the joints on the crossover pipe and gate are important as boost can be lost here. Speaking of boost, I have 4.5mm shimmed the wastegate and got a bleed valve & line. I fitted the rear exhaust section, its going to have to be played with as it sits too low and pokes to much Engine back in and being built up, the head isnt bolted yet (waiting for gasget) just laid on to cover the block. Manifold is on though, Ive blagged an afternoon off, so I hope to get under it and fit the starter/exhaust front and whaterver else can go on without the head.

Problem time. I placed the inlet on to work out the hoses(vacum coolant and boost) very simple as I'm deleting the fuel vapour purge system, cycle valve system and venturi system. As I placed the intercooler in it was obvious it was not going to get any air fed to it. See- img268.imageshack.us/img268/8321/int005.jpg [/img] The turbo cars have a bumper slot like this- I have no desire to fit a turbo bumper anymore. My thoughts were to take advantage of the 5 digit plate and do this- As you can see, the frontal aera isnt massive but its very deep capacity.
