OK, so to cut a long Jagermeister-fuelled story short, I want one. Badly. But I know almost nowt about them! They are front wheel drive, and front engined. Also, the later ones had Wartburg engines that are basically VW Polo lumps built under licence. Questions: What year did these Polo-engined ones start? Are they identical lumps, IE interchangeable? How much room is there in the engine bay? What about parts availability - is there ANY hope of a bolt on brake upgrade, say? ;D

What about these here: www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=243176 I think I misunderstood the title of the thread ;D I like this one most of all... There's usually a few at the Socialist Car Show at Stanford Hall - might be worth having a look at their events listing to find out when it is.

BTW, there was a few decomissioned Feurwagen ones from the East German Volunteer fire service knocking around, just like you get Bays and Splits from the West - the supply might have dried up now though.

Well I'm not expert on Barkases (I haven't owned one myself, yet. ;D ) but they're bloody cool, much more unusual than a bay window camper and I can see where you're going with the VW engine thing. One major thing I should tell you though that might change your plans a little, and this surprised me when I first found out: They're not actually front wheel drive!Yes, they're actually RWD, despite using the engines from FWD cars, firstly from Wartburgs and later from Golfs (it's 1300cc Golf-spec engines they used I think, it was the late model Trabant that used Polo spec engines as far as I know.) I'm not sure exactly what gearbox they use, but I don't imagine it's the most hardy thing in the world, particularly if you were sticking a G60 or 1.8t engine in there I have no idea if it'd be able to handle the torque. More than likely your best bet is to go with a replacement gearbox, if you were really adventurous you could get a crash damaged Golf R32 or Audi TT as a donor car, those have VW engines and back axles, and you could even rig up the powered front axle and centrediff too! As far as I know, the Golf engines in the Barkas are actually Golf units, i.e. interchangeable, but I could be wrong. I have no idea about bolt on brake upgrades etc, but they have semi-eliptic leaf sprung suspension as far as I know, and slamming can be achieved simply by adapting lowering blocks for another car if a suitable set can be found, I don't know how Barkas leaves compare to more availible Western vehicle leaves, or you could just try removing a leaf from the each set of leaves, which will lower the car. Brake-wise, if you were replacing the axles altogether for something more able to handle the speed, power and torque, that would sort your brake problem at the same time I'm sure, so long as you got axles that had big enough discs attatched as standard.

Yes, they're actually RWD, despite using the engines from FWD cars, firstly from Wartburgs and later from Golfs (it's 1300cc Golf-spec engines they used I think, it was the late model Trabant that used Polo spec engines as far as I know.) the 1300 lump as found in the golf is the same as the polo one. infact, all small block engines are the same fitment give or take one bolt on the alternator mount. so thats 895cc mech engines upto 1300 hydro engines (including G40) and then 1.4 16v and 1.6 16v aswell

Ah right, thanks for clearing that up, as you can now tell VWs aren't really my strong point, I had read that later Trabants use 1100cc Polo engines and late Barkases 1300cc Golf units and assumed there was some fundamental difference between them, now that you mention it it makes sense for it to be fundamentally the same unit, thanks for that.

1.6 16v? Interesting ;D It's not going to happen for a while yet - financial constraints... **WARNING MECHANICAL IGNORANCE ON DISPLAY** I found that pic. That black roundy bit sticking out between the gear stick and the engine. Is that not where the driveshafts connect to? IE front wheel drive? They are DEFFO front engined

Stanford Hall is well worth visiting, IIRC there was a couple of Barkas there last year, and i think there are a few in the UK. Looking at that pic i would have said they are front wheel drive. Have you looked at Skoda 1203 as well???

the skoda - whilst undoubtedly cool.. does not benefit from a VAG power plant (unless I'm mistaken) and thus - is no good for Mr. W's plans....... Darren.... keep it under 1500 for cheap tax bargains.... G40 FTW
