I know they're front engined, but I'm slightly confused as to how different sources claim different things, you're right, that engine there is driving the front wheels, and I have read that it's FWD, yet I've read in other places that the Barkas used a RWD layout, I must look into whether a RWD variant was produced, because this is going to annoy me, I'm going to try and find the sources I've read that talked about RWD Barkases, I wonder if the confusion comes from the commercial made before the Barkas, the Framo, which I think may have been RWD, but yes I stand corrected, and I'm off to investigate this futher, do we have any Barkas experts on the site who could help us out here, my specialty is Russian stuff with a bit of Czech thrown in to be honest.

does look to be fwd layout there. although you could in theory make it mid engined RWD just by inverting that setup.
wouldnt inverting it make it have 4/5 reverse speeds and one forward? id be more interested in dual engine possibillities!!?? thats if you can find another gearbox.... or even one that comes with a spare box!? theoretically have a 3.0 via 2x 1.5 units!!

wouldnt inverting it make it have 4/5 reverse speeds and one forward? hmm inverting it was the wrong word then

Simply pick the engine/transaxle/driveshafts/suspension/hubs/wheels and put it in the back! Lock the steering and you're away! For big power leave it in the front and put another on in the back!

excellent plans , also, the engine / box layout is the same as audi 80 / 90 's, so thousands of them readily available, and a huge engine choice ;D 5 pot turbo FTW
