Hunter heaters should nearly burn your feet so something is wrong. If it was me I would have checked that the matrix isn't furred up and replaced it or had it recored if that was the issue - sorry I know that may not be what you want to hear after pulling the dash and putting it back together!
What grille is that on the front? Vogue?

Its amazing how rare hunters are. I often look on ebay to see how much they are going for in case i fancy one in future and there's never any for sale or on completed listings...

^ Yep, it sounds like there's something wrong with the heater. When I got the car the matrix was bypassed and it leaked when I reconnected it. The one in now is a replacement that doesn't leak - but also doesn't heat much! It has been hosed thru' to check for blockages - all ok. I thought the problem was the bypass valve design as it looks like it always bleeds past the matrix, so some hot water from the engine misses the matrix even when the controls are set to "full hot" Hunter are rare? Really A flatmate called it a "labour of love" - afraid he's got a point. I guess 95% of 'em have been cube'd and replaced by something modern & sensible as (financially) they're not worth keeping on the road Where's the fun in that

Here we have this weeks entry for "getting your money's worth from a consumable" All fixed now, the new carbon clutch release bearing is in and working fine after lots of hours long practicing genie-ology by sliding the gearbox back *just* enough to swap the bearings but not so far that the gearbox drops from the car Not happy that a mate waited until I was done then told me that I could have used his ramp The reason I did it on the floor was that he said his ramp was booked up for weeks when I originally asked him Next question - any idea where I can get a non-carbon bearing to fit in the empty housing, to convert it to a traditional setup? On the plus side, I found loose bolts holding the gearlever tower onto the tailshaft of the box, tightened them up during the rebuild and the gearchange now feels like it has an upgraded quickshift kit . Very slick! .. and

Isn't it nice fixing problems you didn't know where problems at all and getting a better car as a result? Top billing.

Remember when the screen got vandalised and the 2nd hand screen was refitted with the old rubbers - I finally managed to fit a new rubber Not happy that I'm still fixing vandal damage after all this time The U-tube link shows an intersting way to fit screens, I tried it but wouldn't recommend it! www.youtubeSpot the difference (before n after) Now I just need to find a tool to refit the imitation chrome screen insert

I've heard of someone using Mk 2 Cortina ones before, but I believe you can still buy new from specialist trimmers. Google it.

where did you get the rubbers from ... ive heard certian ones don't fit properly The rubber & chrome insert came from Speedy Spares. I'd heard a while ago that some rubbers (maybe from Speedys ) were too short, mine has gone in "sort of" ok but I've never fitted one before so not sure if I had to stretch it a little more than is normal. Won't know for sure until the insert is fitted to lock everything in place. Another option would be universal rubber profile cut to length from somewhere like www.sealsdirect.co.uk - might be a cheap n easy way to get a more modern look A sreen insert tool has been ordered, hoping to have the insert fitted by the weekend

Here we have the results of some low budget parts hunting. A new electric fan + digital adjustable temp control at under £15 delivered for the lot seems like a bargain, just add a relay and some spare wire from the junk box and it works I'm so impressed with the bits that I've ordered another fan to make a twin fan setup Removing the old mechanical fan from the waterpump should help the engine get up to temp quicker (it's been snowing up here again this week ) and replacing with a modern elec fan seems like a good idea ... and the new box of tricks has a couple of flashing lights which is always good news 1990's technology - here we come !

That looks superb. How easy was the insert tool to use?

^ Thanks The tool was super-simple to use (even for me - with no experience of doing tidyup type jobs ) but there's knack to it Use lots of soapy water, hold the tool like a chisel 45* angle or steeper, push the strip into the slot at 90* thru' hole in the tool blade at same time as sliding the tool forward. Don't let the tool go too deep into the channel or it will dig into the bottom of the channel. Advice? Don't even think about trying it without a tool, I'm sure it's possible but for under £10 it's not worth the hassle. Check what size insert you have and get a tool to fit (tools for minis are common but narrow, I had to buy a tool with 4 different size heads...). Some tools are made from wire (coathangers? ) mine is pressed (from baked-bean tins? ). I like the one I've got but expect either type will be fine. The front looks much smarted than before - I'm so impressed I'll be getting a new insert to go in the existing rear screen rubber to tidy that end as well

I'll have to figure out which one I need, the rear screen on the Princess has the same sort of seal and I need to remove it to do some minor frame repair at some point. Front and rear chrome inserts are all orange and brittle now anyway, so they need refreshing.
I've got some rare stainless cover-the-rubber type inserts to fit at some point and while they go into the same seal I can't figure out how to actually fit them. I'm wondering if I need a more different kind of tool.

Clutch Problems, Going back a few years, I used to run a Hunter clutch on the back of a 1500 pre cross flow, as I was toasting the 1500gt clutches, a much better clutch and it bolted right up!!! I wonder if you can use a Ford bearing in the Hillman carrier. there are so many carry-overs from Ford to Rootes, it may just work.
