Hi there, I have a question and i figured this would be the right place to ask it I currently have a subscription to performance vw magazine which is about to end. And after a 7 years i fancy something different. (non 100% focused on VAG) I found 3 magazines which seem nice, however since i'm from Holland it is impossible to buy the mag's separately to find out which i like best. - retro cars (same publisher as PVW so should be nice, but i wonder about tech articles?) - practical performance car (bought 1 issue a few years ago while in London, pretty nice mag) - practical classics (used to be available in Holland in the mid 90's and my dad has a few old copies, still a nice mag?) My question to you: what do folks read? Are there any other cool magazines out there? Thanks, Daniƫl

All 3 are good magazines, and very different. Depends what you want from a magazine. I personally buy all 3

Retro Cars is good, but more 'scene' than tech.
PPC. More tech than 'scene' I'd say.
Practical Classics - it's all in the title, probably more modified stuff than in 90's versions.
I wouldn't like to choose between them.

It depends what you're interested in really. Coming from PVW you'd probably like Retro Cars as they're very similar magazines (Same publisher?) but with a wider range of cars.

Retro cars is the only one I tend to bother with but as already said, it can be very 'scene'

They are all pretty different in style and variety but I'd personally choose Retro Cars as it's well written and the photography and features are excellent

Although I haven't got a blue oval, I always buy Retro Ford as its the best written magazine of its type.

PPC anyday.... loads of handy stuff in there, tech articles and cool things like DIY performance mods. also its away from the normal scene curse word, (being told whats cool) and just gives ya loads of nice cars, loads of information to make your own informed desicion on the subject in hand. The others are nice, But retrocars is too much like pvw for my liking. Comes from the same stable so what do ya expect i guess... practical classics is nice, But its just that, Classics.. realy old stuff,, but very interesting too. One thing being the very cool abandoned /rust in peace type bit last time i checked practical classics two of the projects were austin 7's

My two-pennorth...
I subscribe to: - Classic Ford - Retro Cars - Octane - Evo
...as I have quite an eclectic taste in cars, I find that these four cater for most of my needs! Up until last month I subscribed to Practical Performance Car as well (and have done for the past six years) but decided not to bother with it any more as it's just become so negative. The tipping point was a recent issue where there was a feature on a kit car show in which every caption was slagging off the car in question (why bother going then?), a feature on driving two 'Alfas' (a battered GTV and an Alfa-engined Dutton) through Europe, in which they spent the whole time making xenophobic comments, and various other annoyingly negative things - that, and it's become really sloppy of late; it's always riddled with errors in fact, grammar and spelling, which infuriates the pedant in me. I think Will Holman's a great bloke, but he's let his magazine go to pot recently.
Sorry, I've been bottling that up for a while.
I'd say you can't go wrong with Retro Cars. I'd also highly recommend Classic & Sports Car, which I like to get sometimes. And of course (to appease Chris) Retro Ford is well worth a go too! ;D Oh, and Motorsport. It's been going since 1924, so they have a fair idea what they're talking about...

It might aslo be worth considering Classics Monthly, as they have a great mix of articles and tech stuff

Thanks for the input guys, still not sure but atleast i have options. Retro or PPC, don't know yet. EVO, Car, Classic & sportscar & Classic car magazine all available in the better bookstores, and i sometimes buy them. But they don't focus on youngtimers and modifying. I also just checked the currencies and it turns out that i pay 9 pounds an issue. quite a lot for 100 pages of breitling advertisements Great forum btw, shame i didn't find it earlier.

I like Retro Cars. PPC is the mag that i should love, and always religiously buy, but theres something about it thats missing. I don't like the way its written, and the pictures are usually fairly poor. I have always enjoyed Custom Car, which hasnt been menioned yet. Octane would be my personal subcscription of choice.
