i am facing the prospect of painting my golf, but i have no idea where to start. the prep etc isnt a problem but when it comes to what paint and how to mix at what ratio etc.... the easiest option is to get a load of rattle cans from motosave but the finish will be poo so i want to spray it properly. my only problem will be the whole process will take place on my drive as i don't happen to have a spray booth handy! had considered the roller method too but i have yet to see conclusive evidence of the end product any help apprciated

yes
prepare for lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of sanding, golf is about the same size of a mk1 fiesta so roughly 10 hours worth, id reccomend you do it with a compressor and wear breathing aparatus, in a ventilated garage or on a non windy day outside
if you've already got the compressor and spray gear all this can be achived for £26 ;D ;D, my fiesta used to be blue

i have not spayed a compleate car but spay all sorts of things on a seemingly regular basis so i would say just have a go and if it goes wrong you can allways prep it back again. it might take you ages but the satifaction of doing it yourself is well worth it
invest in a decent spary gun and 2nd hand compresor

what paint and how to mix at what ratio etc.... I use cellulose at home. mix with appropriate thiner so the consistency of skimmed milk (maybe adjust for ambient temp. thicker for colder conditions,no thicker than full fat milk). when using cellulose, most people say to use premium or anti bloom thinner. I always use standard, 'cos your painting outside anyway and it will never look like a concours paint job lol. if your painting black, spray all the panels on the car, don't be tempted to remove doors etc. and paint them separatly, because black is an abstard to match in and any defects are obvious straight away. gloss black also requires prob. the best prep work as well and shows every little mistake. time wise, me and the old man resprayed my firebird in 7 hours including prep. I, like you, have to use the drive

I've done them on the drive, and in the garage. Weather is the biggest problem doing it outside. Outside your only real option is Celly. I'd apply a barcoat forst to make sure it doesn't react if your car's OE finish is some other type of paint. I even resprayed a Cortina Mk3 in the street once. Prep is a good 80% of it.

I'm rubbing down the Imp at the moment, but I think I might have a mate of mine paint it, he's a professional sprayer and pretty good, he's a total perfectionist, to be honest I have a feeling I wouldn't be able to do such a good job of it.

I sprayed my Benz satin black (it used to be white) on my driveway. Sheets and sheets of 1200 grit, and about ten 500ml cans of satin black paint at £2.50 a pop from my local auto factors! I did it over 3 days, the finish isn't what you'd call perfect, but she's a rough old bird anyway so it kinda suits it. Still have to post pics of it in its black guise, I'll get round to that sooner or later... I'd say go for it if you're not too bothered about a pristine finish. If you are, get somewhere sheltered to do it and spend a bit more time on the prep / method of applying the paint

you painted your windscreen wipers? that's colour-coding gone mad, surely! do you need special paint for the rubber blades? best bit of advice i can give, if you're doing it outside, is to wait for it to rain, then wait for it to stop and then give it a blast. should keep a lot of the dust out of the air.

not if you dry it.... it'll need wiping down and tack-ragging after you prep it anyway - i didn't mean be ready on the doorstep the minute the rain stops, but if you paint after a damp spell there's less dust around.

is it not possible to put up a decent sized gazebo? On a nice still summers day it will then give you some protection from any wind and dust/bugs in the air, and also have something of a baking effect.

well here we have proof it can be done in the street with rattle cans! thought i'd give it a go and paint the front wing. rubbed down with 400 grit wet n dry, given 4 coats of black then 4 coats of clear. left to harden, then rubbed down with 1200 grit, rubbing compound then polished. it aint perfect as it was an experiment and will get rubbed back and done again to get a perfect finish. for a tenner i don't think you can complain!
