Got the chance of purchasing a M plate mk5 Transit with the efi 2l, it's a sealed bids affair so nothing is a given. My plan is drop the lump into my MK5 Cortina and keep the 1.6 4 speed box for max umph per hour. I'm guessing that I'll need the loom from the van too and am hoping it should all be plain sailing ;D ;D surely I'm not overlooking anything? Any info would be great, never swapped an engine so very green in case you could not tell. A 'in need of help' 'tina for your troubles v v v

Is the transit a 8valve or 16valve? I know they used the 8valve DOHC lumps in them and they should be reasonably easy to plumb into the Cortina, but the 16valvers are a bit more complex as the ecu has a built-in immobiliser which can be a pain to sort....but not impossible As to bolting it upto your 4-speed, as ive found out they do not bolt straight upto a type9 5-speed without either spacing the bellhousing away from the engine about 10-15mm(so the clutch will actually work) or skim the same amount off the flywheel(they have stupidly thick flywheels!) After that......pretty easy i expect Steve

Thanks Steve I don't know what motor it is TBH, I naively thought that all petrol Trannys run 2L Pinto lumps. I need to get down there and have a look methinks, that and do some net research.

That'll be an 8 valvetwin cam i think, will have a Transit MT75 (not the same as the car box) on the back of it as well so not a direct swop for your 4 speed, wiring is pretty simple though, theres a big block with a heavy duty wire that run to the battery and that feeds the engine, at least if they are the same as the Sierra/Scorpio. If you do buy it i'll buy the engine mounts, gearbox, gearbox mount, exhaust and prop shaft off you, in fact if you don't want it and its a tatty donor at a good price gimme a shout and i'll buy the whole thing, it'll save me a fair bit of work.

M reg could be a pinto EFi with EGR and other emmisions plums but that was around the change over to the 8V DOHC "twink" Mk5 never used a 16V the Mk6 did (seen a few L regs with pinto EFis in em but thats the year of reg and it's the year of manufacture that counts) change over was late 95 If it is a pinto the info here will cover most of the install cortinacentral.bravehost.com/Efi1.html If it is the twink no skimming or spacers are needed just use a 1.8 TD bellhousing from a P100 or sierra TD the BH is deeper to take into account the TD thicker flywheel (same thickness as the twink) a type 9 will then bolt straight on the twink as will a 4 speed, just remember the 4 speed only has closer spaced ratios in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, 4th is the same as all RWD boxes at 1 to 1, in real life you will notice more of a gap between first and second with a type9 or 2.0 type E and that's about it but if the 1.6 box is what you already have then go for it ;D I have some pics of the engine mounts you need to make for a twink into a cortina somewhere.

Great stuff, bookmarked the link too. It makes easy reading, I guess the twink conversion is pretty simlair, pics of the mounts would be great if you come accross them.

The twink is a better engine, 125bhp on the injected one and it should 20% more mpg at least, not sure if the transit got low compression versions though? they used to with the old carbed pintos.

This thread is way useful I think I said else where I've driven the van in question and it goes very well indeed, come to think of it much better than the mk2 Pinto lumped one I drove way back. Guess it will be the twink then ;D. I'll get down the yard and check it out, the van has failed an mot needing welding on the chassis and is rusty up top in time honored Transit fashion. Just need to decide what it is worth to me and hope that I win the bid... fingers crossed.

8v Twink is exactly the engine I want in my 'tina. Unfortunealy funds are low at the minute so it'll have to wait Apparently they'll do 40mpg in a Mk5 with an MT75 behind them!

when i picked up the Scorpio donor for my van it was reading 40mpg on the fuel computer at 70mph, given the van is far less aerodynamic (but lighter than the Scorp) it should be able to hit 30-35mpg i hope, which is as good as an old DI would do but with much more power and less noise.
You also have the cheap option to change over to a 2.3 bottom end for a bit more grunt or if you can sort out some management, a complete 16v 2.3 from a bug eye Scorpio has 150bhp which is the same as the old 2.8i would give but without the crappy mpg.

40 MPG So, if I can gather the funds for the outlay then I'll be saving money in the long run ;D This might help me justify more car spend to the good lady, though probably not. Someone please buy my tat, pretty please with a cheery on top. After painting up my Transit at the start of the year I thought that I'd be done working on them for a while, funny how life comes around like a... ;D Fingers crossed for the sealed bidding then.

Its not hard to improve a pinto Cortinas fuel consumption, my 24v Mk5 was averaging 30.2mpg and i wasn't at all gentle with it at times.

I wonned it ;D Bat flattery (couldn't even charge enough to bump it) after standing for over a year so towed to mates house where brand new second hand battery was fitted (thanks Matt). It then fired up on the first turn of key and ran sweet as a nut. Due to; A. Having committed myself to a life of old school buy buying a 2 L pinto (prob a better bet for my first car engine swap and also considering that I struggle to wire up a stereo) B. This new van being a lot less worn torn and looking to need far less work for a ticket than my current DI At this point in time the only engine swap going on is pinto 1.6 for 2.0 and all that's up for grabs is a slightly Smokey (great running)1.6 pinto and a beaten although strong engined DI transit 80 SWB. I'm sure the minibus versions have softer springs which coupled with the very much quieter motor will make a better family camper/ her daily ;D This last bit needs some work, Ange has become attached to the Golf as you do with a first car. Thanks all for the info, even if it hasn't gone the way I first thought all info has been valuable and helped in the end decision.

Oh, forgot to add. The grand plan will be to drop the mk5 inhards into a early (proper) square front Transit though this is some way off yet.
I shall be looking for a suitable base vehicle and more importantly somewhere to hide it ;D

Lol, good luck whatever you do, clean mk2 vans getting harder to find cheap these days so if you find one grab it.
