I'm seriously contemplating a roller paint job for my Golf. The current paint job is cack to say the least, its had a flash over at some point and its flat and all different colours. Basically it cheeses me off. The car is very solid tho, with only very minor surface rust. Soooo, i thought i'd go for a different colour, perhaps with a design of some sort on the roof, or maybe 70's stylee delivery van livery down the side. As my budget is as good as £0 the roller option appeals to me. I realise this isn't going to get me the best finish ever, but thats not my aim.
Has anyone done anything like this before? I've had a look on FusselTuning.de for inspiration, and tried translating it but its not helped much. So;
1: Paint: Could i roller on normal car paint? Or could i use something else thats cheap/different? 2: Application: Is using an interior decorating roller going to give a cruddy appearance? Or are there other rollers i could use? 3: Protection against stonechips etc: Would this be more of a problem than with a "usual" paintjob, if so, how far would a clear laquer finish go towards protecting the paint?
Any help/suggestions/opinions on this idea would be great, i'm not 100% sure about doing it yet, or even exactly how i'd like it to look!

I asked about roller painting a couple of weeks ago. The jist I got from it was: regular car paint, a gloss roller from a DIY shop and some 1200 grit or Scotchbrite to key the paint up. Want to do the Volvo red-oxide ;D

I've done loads of cars with a roller! Seriously though, only matt colours - anything shiney will look awful. Get one of those small foam (not cloth) rollers used for paining down the back of radiators, and a 1/2" brush for edges. 2 coats usually does it, but more will help. I've used all sorts of paints (usually what ever is in the garage at the time) including enamals, primers and regular house paint. We did a Jetta using a £4.99 tub of white emulsion a few years back, but we were drunk... It only had a few months MOT, and it sure wasn't gona get another! I was shown another way to paint cars about 10 years ago by a guy who restored Morris Minors for a living (he only did this on his own car by the way!). It works very well with a little practice, and you can get quite a good shine out of it with some work. It only works with enamal. Paint the car with a brush. Do one panel at a time. Paint the first coat on. Wait until tacky. Paint the second coat on and wait until tacky again. Then take a clean brush and work fairly hard over the paint. This will actually smooth out the brush marks. When hard, you can the get a good shine using 1200 grit wet paper, then cutting polish. Have a practice on an old piece of metal - you'll be suprised by the results!

i don't know why anyone says , anything shiney will look awful? there was a thread i think it startyed off on some MOPAR site in yankeeland, but its kicking about everywhere now, he rollered his charger or some other generic muscular type car, in a gloss orange and it was truly awesome finish to it. a definite option if you don't have the facilities to do a good job with a spraygun.
i'll try find the link later, right now i really cannot be bothered.

Depends what effect you are trying to achieve as well I guess.

mike in da house: I'm seriously contemplating a roller paint job for my Golf.Go for it!!!!! I have had a Chevy Suburban kind of like this..... ...that was first rollered with paint stripper, then hosed down with water and left to dry for 24 hours, the we all got at it with rollers & semi flat black paint and it looked quite sinister after that, always had the right of way in intersections..... DP says: Let's see more rattle can & roller paintjobs in 2006, rat's the word.....

I suspect there is a lot of wishful thinking going on with this roller mallarky. I have yet to see any pics where you can actually tell if the finish is any good.

I think the way to go with this is to try it on an old piece of metal, to see which way looks best, this gives me the chance to try different things without wrecking what little finish there is to the paint on my car.. My dad has an old MGB bonnet i might be able to half inch and do this on, i might even be able to get some decent photos to show the finishes side by side.
