Don't know if weve had one of these before, but thought it might be an idea to have a thread with various car related first and lasts and the stories behind them....ie. 1st Turbo car, 1st 4wd, 1st Diesel, 1st\last car with Pop up lights, etc etc...you get the idea. I'll have a go 1st (Don't know if this is definately correct tho!!) Apparently the 1932 Cord 810 was the 1st with pop up lights ![](http://members.chello.nl/j.baartse/carpics/Cord.jpg)

The first diesel car invented was also the first biofuel car. Rudolf Diesel showed off the first Diesel engine in Augsburg, Germany in 1893 and it ran on peanut oil. In 1892 Diesel applied for a patent in Germany and in 1898, he was granted a U. S. patent as well. ![](http://www.firstcarnow.com/images/citroen-rosalie-diesel.jpg)

Somewhere in-between 1832 and 1839 (the exact date is unknown), Scotsman Robert Anderson is credited with inventing the first electric car (by some accounts, though this is still under debate). The first electric car was a crude beast. Around 1834 or 1835 American Thomas Davenport is also credited with building the first electric car. ![](http://www.firstcarnow.com/images/first-electric-car.jpg)

The first solar car invented was a tiny 15-inch vehicle created by William G. Cobb of General Motors. Called the Sunmobile, Cobb showcased the first solar car at the Chicago Powerama convention on August 31, 1955. The solar car was made up 12 selenium photovoltaic cells and a small Pooley electric motor turning a pulley which in turn rotated the rear wheel shaft. The first solar car in history was obviously too small to drive. ![](http://www.firstcarnow.com/images/first-solar-car.jpg)

Ford scorpio, much maligned, last rwd european ford. If more people were brave enough to get past the strange looks, they'd find an extremely comfortable and dirt cheap big cruiser. ![](http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p185/asphaltrisin/scorpio.jpg)

The first Australian designed and built production car: ![](http://www.aussiecoupes.com/images/fx_holden.jpg) Holden 48-215 (FX) And the last unique Australian designed and built production car engine, which is still going but is due to be phased out soon: ![](http://www.victoriatexas.org/mshow_syd_04_fpv_09b.jpg) Ford's inline 6 cylinder, this is the FPV F6 Turbo version. This motor has been derived from continuous local improvements to the Ford Falcon 6 cylinder which arrived from America in 1960 with 144ci, non-crossflow pushrod head and a single carb. Australian local design changes have seen it grow to 4 litres, and sprout twin overhead cams, variable valve timing, alloy head and now turbocharged versions producing up to 310kW from the factory. With Holden now building only localised versions of global GM family engines, the Falcon 6 will be the last gasp of Aussie engine design. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

The first Australian designed and built production car: erm... ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png) The design was originally penned in the United States by Chevrolet before World War II, but was rejected because it was deemed too small for the U.S. market

Apparently, the 1962 Oldsmobile Jetfire Turbo Rocket, fitted with Garrett® T05 with integrated wastegate, was the first turbocharged production passenger car. Apparently…. ![](http://i948.photobucket.com/albums/ad322/v8herald/1963_Oldsmobile_F85_Jet_Fire_V8_Turbo_Engine_1.jpg)

Obviously a lot of the design work was done in the US because we didn't have the facilities yet, and being that it was released in 1948 they had to use something which was essentially warmed-up leftovers from before the war, because they were austere times. Suffice to say that for the first time in our nation's history there was a large amount of Australian design input, full Australian manufacturing and the launch of a new, entirely Australian nameplate with much fanfare. It was definitely the defining moment in the birth of our car industry, so I shall claim it as the first Aussie car. Oh, and while we're on the subject of precisely what originated from Australia and what didn't, Russell Crowe is from New Zealand, and I wash my hands of him on behalf of Australia!

Ooh, Cord! One of my favourites! However I’d go for the supercharged 812, personally… Mirroring Balti Pie’s thread-starter, the last time pop-up headlamps appeared on a volume-production car was in 2004 when both the Lotus Esprit and C5 Corvette ended production. According to a well-known encyclopedia... ![](http://i948.photobucket.com/albums/ad322/v8herald/Lotus.gif) ![](http://i948.photobucket.com/albums/ad322/v8herald/800px-Chevrolet_C5_Corvette_Convertible_Orange_Julep.jpg)

I find the fact that the Esprit was still in production in 2004 quite amusing! It must have looked outdated at least 10 years earlier. I must admit that I've never really understood or liked the Esprit though, it just looks so visually heavy and un-Lotus, especially in the later body-kitted forms.

I know, very small production figures, doesn't really count. I just wanted to post a picture of a Guara.
