Hi! (First post!) In the "think different" article on the Features Page it mentions a Bauhaus-inspired type 3 VW. I'd love to see pictures of it. thanks, Ben

As one who doesn't normally keep his eye on the VW stuff and generally likes old cars to look old even I think that is pretty awesome!

That car is what finally made me sell my squareback, everything about it except the wheels is what I'd have liked to do to mine so I thought "whats the point, it's been done now" time to move on By the way Hello and welcome

Wow, I'm not interested in VW's that much but that is a stunning car and a fantastic bit of work - great conversion.
Ten points man!

Bauhaus is a reference to the design school : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BauhausIt's not actually a VW style, just where that car picked up it's design influences from

[stands back expecting rapid flaming] hmm. Term bauhaus bandied about far to often imho. Can't see a lot of bauhaus influence in the car. fabulous as it is. There's more to form over function than just stripping stuff down. In it's own way the inside is just as bling as any other show car. [/stands back expecting rapid flaming]

" A school of German art and design founded by Walter Gropius in 1919. The idea behind the Bauhaus style was based on simplified forms and unadorned functionalism. Followers of the Bauhaus style believed that elegantly designed items could be made for the masses using techniques and materials now industrially available." Simplified Form. Check Unadorned Functionalism. Check Industrially available materials. Check-ish For the masses... no Bauhaus was also about innovation.. and for that it gets a big check.

My Mrs is a theatre student, doing a BA in Performing Arts.
She knows a lot about Bauhaus, and she gives the Squarerra a big thumbs up.
I know nothing about it, nor do I care, but I know I LOVE that car.

Simplified form - no industrial chic yes Unadorned functionalism - no minimalist racer chic yes Industrially available materials - no automotive jewellery yes For the masses - no for the masses - no Innovation - seen this it before. Craftsmanship - yes loads, devotion yes loads, love yes loads. An early 2cv is a prime example of all the Bauhaus ethics in so many more ways than this. It's a great car but to label it Bauhaus is to use the term in the most superficial way. (imho)

I'm with 104ZS on this. Yes, it is a cool car, but the Bauhaus analogy is pushing it a bit; eg - since when do carbon fibre bumpers constitute form following function? Also, there are plenty of other tasty wheels which follow the Bauhaus ethic far more than the ones shown.

So no it doesn't follow 100% but then it has enough of an influence to justify it being used as a short hand for the design aesthetic applied to the vehicle... The wheels were from the car the engine came from I believe Innovation - seen this it before. Really? I'd love to see the VW styled like this before,.. more I'd like to see the Type 3 styled like this... more than that I'd like to see the Type 3 estate styled like this....

Bauhaus was a jump off point for the design. So no it doesn't follow 100% but then it has enough of an influence to justify it being used as a short hand for the design aesthetic applied to the vehicle... Bauhaus as shorthand acceptable in my book, but obviously a bit stretched to non-air heads... Ultimately, the car is known as 'that bauhaus inspired squareback', so "popular" culture ignores the semantics Really? I'd love to see the VW styled like this before,.. more I'd like to see the Type 3 styled like this... more than that I'd like to see the Type 3 estate styled like this.... Please don't get me wrong, I really, really like this car... But as for the outside look, it could very easily be dismissed as "another german look vw" Smooth & tidy - check Exotic material on the bumpers - check Big porsche wheels - check Ok, so it's not silver... But seen it all before - from a distance... Close up: frame chassis, flat carbon floor (fnarr), porsche gubbins, factory quality finishit's all in the details up close. In summary then: This car is special. It may not be Bauhaus, but it's known as being. It looks similar from the outside to other german look vw's, but has enough difference in the detail for HW to go off on one... I'm off to look for some more pics of this awesome car. (If anyone wanted to know, it's the July 2004 VolksWorld magazine it's featured in)

I think you're all right! But most importantly if Brian (it's owner) says he was inspired or influenced by Bauhaus then he was. Even if the car didn't come out with those influences on show to all, the influence was there because Brian said it was. I'm influenced by Hot Rods and Bosuzuku styling, but my car isn't either.
