Just been speaking to a friend about a Morris Minor he's thinking of buying, and we both commented on the fact that it'll smell the same as any other Minor.
So was just wondering what cars evoke the strongest smells from memory? Even with a V8 and full new chassis one of his old Minors still smelt of that musty/leathery/unwashed/metallic smell...
What about a Magic Tree collection based on retro tin? Allegro velour anybody? ;D

Eau d'Marina. All Marina's smell the same. FACT. Kinda musty and oily and a little bit like something might have died in it....

never had the pleasure of a Marina myself, I remember an Ital (sooo 1983) being mighty pungent though.
The worst I can think of was a Mk3 Cortina that a Jack Russell breeder had done 300k in, with the sunroof open on the tow car, we could smell it as we trailered it back up the motorway...
Dammmn.

When I were a lad in the boy scouts, the scout leader had a bedford HA which we were quite often transported in to 'orienteering competitions' etc.... unfortunately his job was as a butcher, & the inside of the van usually smelt of offal. GRIM!
My BMW smells fragrant, owing to the copious use of air-freshners. It's the first car I've owned in years that doesn't honk of old shoes... mostly before I've had wagons or hatches, & the smell from the pair of old boots I normally forget to take out of the boot gets everywhere. ;D

Even completely stripped, I reckon you'd ID my 240 from ten paces then. I guess what you're saying here is that it's a FWD/RWD thing right? Getting technical, I like it... ;D My BMW just smells, a heavy odour, not too bad just kind of heavy. Like the interior itself, solid and robust... Like a managing director who got divorced and let his personal hygiene slip a little. ;D

at the mo' it smells like vanilla, its the only air freshner fragrance i can stand (pine trees suck) its either that or the eau de la mouldy pastie the previous owners kids left for me under the back seat .the 240s and 340s had this odd musty smell ,a bit like old people at the doctors, with a niff of ralgex about them.

How weird! When I had ZS's in the mid 80's they all smelt the same. Then I got in the one I have now to test drive it when i went to see it and the first thing that hit me was the same smell, after 20 years! Smells take you right back don't they.

I've noticed the distinctive smells Volvos tend to have, the 740 has a smell that's different from a 2 series smell, but it definately smells well built if that's possible! ;D Well, that and the permanant faint leftover of a lifetime of having magic trees hanging from the rear view mirror and having 'Back to Black' and the like lying inches thick on all the black plastic surfaces of the interior, the car's been in my family since my dad got it at a ridiculously low price when it was about a year old, it was his car until a few years ago until he gave it to my grandad to use because when his 244 expired, then when my grandad took ill and couldn't drive (and then died quite recently) my dad ended up with it again. The thing is, my dad has always had a habit of smothering every polishable surface on a car in polish of some description, which kept it immaculate but I remember as a kid being scarcely able to breath in the car when it was just done because the interior was so full of polish-fumes. ;D The result is that the car still smells of polish at twenty paces. ;D The 960 smells of leather inside, nor surprising considering everything that's not made of wood or covered in velvet (yes the roof lining and insides of the A, B and D pillars appear are coated in velvet or something like it, diplomats are a funny lot! ;D ) is wrapped in the stuff, so it's hard to avoid the smell of leather, not that it's a bad thing, it makes it smell older than it is, I have a friend who has a Rover P2 saloon and the leather smells similar.
