I love these little cars. I believe they are 848cc a series powered and rwd. Hence a 1275 a series engine out of a midget will go in. Obviously very tuneable. Dunno what they are like to drive or anything have always just had a soft spot for them Sorry about picture size.

I've only ever seen one of these, and that was in the scrappers a while back I'd forget the A-series and stick a K in there instead! OK it's not a bolt-in job like an A-series would be but it'd shift! Or a 220 Turbo engine... nyooommmmmm!!!!

HHMMMMM. I think you'd need to do a lot of work to get a 220 turbo engine in however a 1.8 k series might not be so hard.

Oh dear, good job you wasn't at this classic car auction in Norwich last sunday. A40 in that same blue, no bumpers, a big '72' on the side doors, white steelies, midget lump with single su and k&n,free flow exhaust, Tax (free) and MOT, sold for approx. £650. Apparently a daily driver.! Remember seeing an Black A35 years ago at a boy-racer meet in Norwich with a Rover V8 squeezed under the bonnet. Link to the details, no pics thou.: www.johnsuttonauctioneers.co.uk/AUSTINA40.htm

MAybe so. I'm full of cold at the minute and my brain isn't working... Ah yes I meant the 820 Turbo, with the T-Series (?). Either way, sticking anything remotely spicy inder the lid would be a massive h0ot!

Early A40's were 948cc, later ones uped to 1098 minor engines. The early ones also used teh A35's hydro mechanical rear brakes whereas later Mk 2 farinas got fully hydraulic set ups so a better place to start from if you're going to mod one. I also think one of these would make a great daily with a 1275 and midget discs. Surely twin cam fiat would be a real retro man's engine swap of choice though

What about Nissan CA18 or even SR20? Gulp. Or Vauxhall 16v?
In his pre-Datsun days Ratdat used to play with these, and I also knew a guy who was fitting a Datsun A12 engine (120Y etc) into an A40.
Years ago there used to be an A40 Hot Rod racing on the ovals, powered by a 1700 X-flow.

Surely twin cam fiat would be a real retro man's engine swap of choice though Indeed - the only A40 i've knowingly seen that goes to our local rod/old car meet is Fiat Twin Cam powered - its the estate/hatch version & again I think its that same light blue colour (actually thinking about it, it maybe Windsor Grey?)

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

You could always use the B-Series from the Maestro / Montego........2ltr EFI Turbo.... don't mean to be nitpicky or anything iRocco, but Maestro/Montego's used the O-series engine, and its a much bigger engine than an A-series, might be a curse word to fit in an A40.

I had a Countyman A40 (the 'Countryman' tag denotes a split tailgate - Range Rover stylie). The damn thing drove like the brakes were always on and I could never find out why (no, it wasn't just slow!), I tried to fit my BMW 2002 5.5J steels on, but they centre bore was wrong, and faced with the concept of a slow, standard rimmed 'classic' I got rid. In reality though, they make much more sense than a Minor...they're coil sprung at the front, but still share enough mechanicals to make the spares situation viable. I've seen TwinCam'd ones, which seems a logical step if you're following Minor philosophies. I think I'd go for a grey (gloss) with a black roof, a stock blue vinyl pleat interior - bar a small pod-mount rev counter on the dash , 5.5J steels (if I could find them) with stretched crossplies!, very low suspension, a roof rack with a set of black minilites and period racing Dunlops (yellow lettering) strapped on, a turbo'd A series with a side exit exhaust and a straight cut gearbox that whines so loud that a stereo would be utterly pointless. Edit...here's my old (slow and standard) one:
