Am currently on holiday in Turkey. Today we went on a coach trip and passed the most awesome scrapyard I have ever seen. I was looking out for Dubs and spotted it. It had 3 early bay window campers. three beetles. one Chevrolet Apache pickup and the biggest 50s tailfinned cadillac I have ever seen. All appeared to be complete and in mint condition. There were about 100 cars in total and all were classics. Gonna rent a bike and go back tomorrow to investigate. Anybody know anything about importing from Turkey?

The Turkish Department of Antiquities is quite thorough in their taxation and export duties and domestic heritage restrictions. I once tried to export Alexander The Great's chariot, but no luck. You may have better luck with the Trojan Horse. Or, if on bicycle, just a packet of Trojans. ;D

I saw a scrapyard in Acomb around 30 years ago with over 1000 cars which were totally mint and most were American. Don`t have any pics to prove it though. (Sorry effects of bourbon kicking in)

Turkey really strict on taking cars out. If you drive a car in, you will need docs to prove it to drive it out again. If it is a turkish regged car, there is very little hope of getting it out.

Gutted. Spoke to a few of the locals in our hotel and it is apparently a private collection that some guy owns. Even so it is an awesome collection with over 100 motors. Am desperate to get back over that way and get some pics before I come home on monday. Just for the cadillac.

I can only begin to imagine your distress, DW. One time I was in Texshuss USA, and I came across this beautiful garden of Caddys growing out in a field. They also were not for sale. I cried for many hours.

If Turkey is an EU member state now (and TBH I got so bored with the "you guys are mean to Kurds and invaded Cyprus" bit that I lost interest and forget whether they got in or not) then you can quote the Treaty of Rome (1957) which guarantees free movement of goods and establishment of services from, into and between all EU member states.
ie if Turkey is an EU Member then it would be illegal for them to prevent you exporting a car from there to any other EU country (e.g. the UK). It would also mean no taxes or duty when you get it to the UK also.
However if Turkey isn't a member of the EU then this is not relevant....

I googled.
All of which would suggest to me that the Treaty of Rome would be applicable? I dunno. But this is the sentense which suggests to me it might
I'll bet that means they have to abide by standing instruments.

however, as an associate member and someone attempting to get full membership and a signatory of the customs union (which is all about free movement of goods and services) you'd think you'd have room for a challenge on a refusal to allow an export...

Having stood in line at Customs at various "Associate" or "Pending" members of the EU, I can reassure the class that it doesn't mean diddly squat for international intercourse. Although it means something for intercoursing "you".
