I've always loved the square Cortinas, funny how back in the day we considered them big heavy cars, but now they are lighter than the most basic Fiesta. Yeah that was in my head too but to drive they feel light and even the 1.6 can get things upto speed reasonably fast, plus a strongish car (as the racers love em).

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Nice cortina familybanger Glad your happy with it mate Cheers mate, I'm very happy with it. So much so that I have washed and wait for it... Yes, broke out Grandads old bottle of T-Cut ;D true love indeed. It is a lot lighter than the Golf MK3 (funny that) and that 1six pinto feels sweet. Only gone for 5th a couple of times and loving the RWD Here's a full pic, post wash but pre polish 200 odd miles done since picking it up and enjoyed ever one. Got chatting to a bloke who lives local and has one in the same colour plus spares also a few of the 'I used to have one of them' brigade, ah the joys of retro motoring.

24v it, lots of smooth torque and 200bhp really livens them up.

I was really surprised by how modern they feel. Mine felt really big when I first got it, but now when I get in it it feels tiny compared to my golf.

For now the 1.6 will be fine, I'm sure I've some past there best 14' tyres in the garage. Bring the rain ;D

cheap upgrade is to bung in a 2 litre pinto, on the 1600 gearing it will be suprisingly quick considering they only have an extra 20bhp and it will drop right in.

Funny you should mention that, a rusty mk5 petrol transit may be comming my way soon. It's turning into a proper yard round here, best start sorting out some of the neighbors motors to stay on good terms.

transits used to have a low compression version of the engine in with a crappy carb on, so they weren't any faster than the 1600 in the cortina, would run on 2 star fuel though, dunno about the later vans.

Got a case of can't sleep which co insides nicely with an early start up town tomorrow Think I'll leave 4 wheels at home for the extra time in bed the bike will give Anyway - Pintos 2 L 205 is the one to have yes? Been for a late night rip and got chatting with a racer at Blackheath tea hut who informed me of this. He was full of banger knowledge and all over the 'Tina like a fly round S***. Had a good chat though, you get some proper characters up there at night, think it's my second favorite 24hr eatery after the Brick Lane bagel shop. Not sure about the possible van lump that may swing my way although I have driven it many times and it goes well even with a swb Transit wrapped around it. I do know it's an EFI one with 60 odd K and have also found out today that a mates dad, who's another ex racer still has his worked over 2L head sitting in the garage. Pinto power mated to the 1.6 gearbox is looking appealing, even if the Transit doesn't come through

205 block is the strong one but unles your gonna be tuning it its not really going to make much difference, Efi pinto has a better cam and unleaded head as standard.
we used to make sure the weber was working ok and stick a tubular exhaust manifold and freeflow exhaust on em, the inlet side of a pinto is actually pretty good, a freeflow exhaust wakes them up nicely, i never got into spending money to tune them as it was so cheap and easy to drop a 150bhp V6 in there.
These days an injected twincam from a Sierra (125bhp) is probably the cheapest way to wake it up and still have an economical car, you'd have to make engine mounts, a gearbox mount and a propshaft and fit an electric fuel pump (we used to nick the set up off a granny or capri) wiring is pretty simple.
having said that, if your gonna change engines and fit the 5 speed MT75 its not THAT much extra work to drop the 24v in if you can find a good one cheap, mine was averaging 30mpg but i had made some alterations to it and been sensible about gettig everything working right.

You've got to love Cortina's. I was 100% sure I was going to buy another Cortina right up until the point I handed the money over for my SD1. I'm sure I'll own another one day.
FamilyBanger, I recon with a few days work with the paint and polish and that will look the business. None of the standard Cortina engines was exactly a tower of power but even the 1.6 is liveable plus as said there's loads of bolt on stuff out there that'll make go a bit quicker if you don't want to start swapping engines.

I agree there is stuff around for bolting on, but its always cheaper to just fit a bigger engine, especially in a car with a big engine bay and a lot of easy swops, plus you end up with a much nicer driving vehicle.
Save up for a big engine is my advice and don't spend your money trying to make an 80bhp engine into a road burner.
