Yeah, it was eBay I saw it on. Look like it had been rolled as well IIRC.
Some stuff that gets bangered does make you sick. Some stuff thats really really rare, and some stuff gets stolen to banger as well. A chap I know-ish is involved in it and some of the cars he's bangered well, you'd scream. He'll travel littereally anywhere in the UK to collect as well. Theres a lot of effor t goes into bangers. Its not just pick up an old Volvo out of the local paper and knock the glass out.
Some of these guyshave competetions to find the rarest and most "sacrelidgious" cars to banger. Like a 2 door vanden plas coupe, one of only three made and this one was previously owned by Winston Churchill. They couldn't get the owner to sell it, so they stole it trashed it, and then bought it legally of the insurance company...

Well this thread has opened my eyes! I must point out my friends who have and do 'banger racing at Hendsford Raceway would never be involved in 'theft' etc or (as I've gone at lenghts to emphassise) wreck 'good' cars. And to quote alistark: "Its not just pick up an old Volvo out of the local paper and knock the glass out." Actually that is percisely what they do (providing it's an M.O.T failure, if saveable then off down to vehcile club to offer it to anyone willing to save it) About 4 years ago you may remember there was a 'fellon' who won the lottery, aparantly he's a bit of a rogue! Last year he turned up at HENSFORD for a demo derby. Naturally fellow banger racers knew of this chap and his behavour/criminal past ...and he was NOT welcome. I've said it before and I'll say it again some of my friends are banger racers (and also have done the car jumping extraviganza) and they would NEVER be involved in this sort of attitude towards classic cars. As a side note a couple of these 'banger racer friends' are vehicle mechanics (as well as the one being seroiusly into old school/classic Fords) and have a very good reputation for doing work on peoples cars. They've done jobs for me and there attention, devotion and care has and is superb and they also are happy to help anyone in a vehicle predicament.

it just seems like quite a pointless sport to me. i've been to watch it but the cars racing weren't special. the idea of that '28 dodge being bangered makes me feel sick. i know someone who 'raced' a late 70s Jag that he got given under the impression that he was going to restore it each to their own though.

I guess there are just good and bad in every activity in life.
The banger racers who steal cars are just typical traveller scum, just like the tw@ts who wrecked a load of Jaguars in Newport (see separate thread).
I wouldn't have kept valuable cars in a industrial estate lock up, but somewhere in the countryside hidden away in an anonymous farm building.
Unfortunately there are too many stupid, vindictive, jealous people in this country now. If they can't have what you have, they will just smash it up. Makes me feel like emigrating TBH!

I cant find a 'after' pic but I can find a race report, apparently it did get mullered. Seems to have the classic Hiab damage to the door frames. And i honestly believe that it was in better nick than most of the cars i've owned too.

You are aware there are special "classic banger" meets? Pre 1967 only and pre 1972. At one event last summer no less than 72 (yup, seventy two) Austin Cambridge/Morris Oxford series cars met their end. Thats a fearsome attrition rate! OK, no doubt some of them were complete rotters noone would ever restore, some were picked clean carefully of usefull parts so that these could be sold on to restorers, but some were good clean cars which could have had years ahead on the road... Some had the useful bits chucked in the skip. This is the sad thing.
A lad I know knows a couple of guys who banger P5B Rovers. They are probably one of the largest suppliers of used P5 parts in the south LOL. At least they make an effort, whether you like the idea of the car sbeing bangered or not. They sell the good bits on, and they sell the parts cheap.

I think you'll find the Dodge had a destrution order by an insurance company, and could not be put back on the road.

I think you'll find the Dodge had a destrution order by an insurance company, and could not be put back on the road. in that case they should have strapped the insurance assesor to the bonnet before they took it out in the death. while we're on the banger subject, there was a rolls royce and caddilac derby once. one guy (with a rolls) asked "if I get through to the final, can I take my other car out?" the men in charge said ok. the guy makes it through to the final and as they are all gather to go out in said final, the guy unveils his other car, a mint corniche! he made one lap before it was run into the wall f*?"£!$%%^&&****** (unbeliveable language and rant over)

Theres plenty of ways round a destruction order if you are devious enough Not saying anything else on a public forum... I know (vaguely) a chap who bangers a 1950s Pontiac, and although sad to see that is also a destruction order car. Basically someone tried to rip the insurance company off on it so they'd pay for a full resto on it for them, the insurance found out and any car involved in an insurance fraud gets a DO on it. Tis a shame when its a classic or vintage but thats how the rules work.

I think you'll find the Dodge had a destrution order by an insurance company, and could not be put back on the road. Not convinced, as I'm sure it was on ebay not long after it had been raced.
