Hey Dude, You could just wire the lamp between the switched side of the fan and the live (ignition) feed. It will draw current through the fan when the fan's not running and thus glow.

Zackly what he said. Of course, the circuit would have to be supplied from ignition else the light would be on the whole time the car was parked up.
As for switch which is OFF-ON1-ON2 try a switch meant for 2 speed wipers or two speed heater fan.

There are the simple 12v relays which are on/off (terminals 30, 85, 86 ,87) and there are ones which switch (terminals 30, 85, 86, 87, 87a). Use the latter one so if the relay is off, it could send power to the lamp (87a), when it is on to the fan (87).

Got to ask, but why would you ever want the fan to be off?
Auto and on I can understand, I've got the same setup on the rally car, but off?! Seems like you're setting yourself up for a fried engine at some point if you were to forget it was in the off position and not notice the temp gauge. . .

i can think of several reasons for a fan off switch, if your fording deep water you don't want the fan running, it chops the water up into fine mist and throws it all round the engine bay and then its much easier for it to drown your electrics, also switching it off will lower the load on the alternator and would give you at tiny bit more power at the wheels, could be important for a drag racer for example.

Thanks for the feedback guys ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) To be honest i haven't really thought of why i'd need a off mode, just thought it would be nice with a manual override, since i have trouble trusting a metal blob with two terminals in it ;D Calamity & Datman - if use that method, wouldn't the light be on while the switch is on "auto" but the fan is off?

Calamity & Datman - if use that method, wouldn't the light be on while the switch is on "auto" but the fan is off? Yes it would be. Guess that's probably not what you want. In that case, a relay is probably the best way to go if you really don't want to change the switch for a on-on-on. You'll need a changeover type relay and you could drive the coil via diodes from each of the two positions on your switch: Make sure the diodes go in the right way round.

what about this? If your system doesnt use a relay, all you'd need to do is ... ![](http://www.datman.co.uk/rr/radfan.jpg) and with relay ![](http://www.datman.co.uk/rr/radfanrelay.jpg) (could use a small 3 way switch like this cgi.ebay.co.uk/140330721342 )

Question: why do you want the light to glow when the fan is off??

datman - that was ofcourse my first idea, but apparently it's amazingly hard to find a 3-way switch which looks good enough around here...
Skoda - To remember to turn the fan on ;D

Can i ask why you want a off posision as i would think this would be a quick rought to a new head gasket , you can rig up a override swith with a glowing lamp without too much hassel ,

Hey Dude, Just realised the diagram I posted before is not so great. If you leave the switch in 'auto' while the car is off, the battery will drain slowly thru the relay coil. You could wire it so that the switch is on the ignition circuit instead of directly on the battery, but then the fan won't run-on, so I'm changing my vote to find a proper three-way switch you like the look of.
