Hopefully this might come in useful, not only to me but anyone else looking for info. There's been a lot of threads over the years about ICE and Retros but they are scattered about (and the search function is iPoop), maybe pop a load of useful Q&A in here? We had that good Chinese radio that a few bought & tested but that threads pretty much lost! Just a thought. Either way, I have a question: Can anyone suggest any good, powerful speakers that are - how's best to put it - sympathetic to the interior of a retro? There's a lot of nasty garish shizer out there that just looks MackinTOSH in anything over a decade old. I want to chop into the doorcards at the front of the Sledric and pop some 5"/6" speakers in. They cant be particularly deep either so as not to foul the window mechanism. So, what's about thats: - Reasonably priced - Retro Friendly - Got some grunt Most people aren't that fussy about having crazy quality in the car...just some 'choons' to roll to. (god knows I'm a total audiophile at home but retros rattle and squeak so much it's pretty much academic how 99.89765% pure the fidelity is LOL) Also, does anyone know somewhere that still sells the 'under dash' DIN 'pods'?

On my 230, down in the footwell kick panels, there were fresh air vents. I think a 330 will be the same. If you pull the vent assembly out there's a hole big enough to get a decent sized speaker into so you can do a really subtle install where the speakers aren't even visible. Saves chopping the door cards up too.

Keep your eye on Herald / Vitesse parts on the Bay of E.......There`s a chap on there selling what you want in S/Steel & it has aperatures at each end for extra instruments. The only drwback is that he incribes the word Herald of Vitesse on it. As he makes these up at work he might just make you a special.
I thought he was a tad expensive so for my daughters Herald I`ve tacked a cage to a bit of galv which in turn is bent n bolted under the dash a little way back with the wooden front from a Herald ashtray with magnets hanging in front of the ICE when parked up.

JBL are ideal, they do some cheap 6" coaxial speakers ('frauds sell them) and they live up to the name "Just Bloody Loud" and are 2 ohms, so will suck every last drop of power out of your head unit by running it outside spec. Never know it be a problem, and I sold dozens of pairs of these back at the mill. For what you pay they are a reasonable quality, very efficient speaker. A++++ caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/4886.htmlTWENTY FIVE POUNDS. THIS IS CHEAP They fail on the looks side, though. EDIT: They also do these, which are shallower, look nicer but likely will lose a bit of kick caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/10674.htmlEDIT 2: They all look awful up to about the £90 mark, when you hit DLS/Rainbow/Focal kit, which is wasted in a noisy retro motor really.

The shallow ones seem good, but I listen to a lot of Dub so might pee me off having no kick (though I have a sub for the boot - must finish that/sell it)

the way i would go about it would be to look on ebay, with auction only selected and keep and eye out for some nos or good used speakers. theres pleant of period speakers for sale on there. they don't even need to be big. slap a small sub in the boot and that will do most of the hard work. my polo runs 3.5" full range speakers up front with them filtered so they don't get any bass signals to them and a 10" sub in a very small ported box (not much bigger than the sub!) sounds great and is loud enough to drain out any rattles. my pickup has a set of 5" full ranges in the doors and an 8" sub behind the passenger seat setup in a similar way to the polo. also sounds pretty good. cost naff all to! the jl audio sub was 99p off ebay, the speakers free, and the rest of the kit ive had for 10 years anyway!

I had wondered about those panels I guess it could be rigged to have the audio come out the air grille! That's pretty much what I did with mine, only I then covered the panel with cloth so you couldn't tell there was anything there. The cavity behind the vent is a decent size. It connects up into the scuttle ends for fresh air so if you fit any speakers in there with a bit of power, you'll be able to enjoy music out of your scuttle vents ;D

Definitely get a sub sorted - for what a cheap 2nd hand setup costs, they make such a massive difference to the listening experience, and it allows you to (as above) cut a some of the bass out of the front speakers which takes a lot of load off them.

All you have to do is flush mount the speakers and find a retro grill to fit over the top, it'll be easy buying whatever fits than looking for something that looks right

Does that also mean the speakers will enjoy a bit of the scuttle weather (ie: rain)? No, water can't get to them. (otherwise it'd come in the fresh air vents!)

Possbly get some matching material/fabric the same as yoor door cards and cover the speakers with that, as long as it's perforated (if leather/vinyl) or loose weave material the sound will still be perfectly audiable and it keeps them stealthy looking.

Yeah, I'd go to a boot sale a find some retro speaker units with grill that you like the look of, then replace the units with some good quality speakers like some modern Alpines or something

Btw,some Jags are a useful source of classy looking old fashioned style speaker covers - chrome edging around black mesh grilles. Probably more suitable for '60s cars though.

Nakamichi units are one I looked and also the Becker ones when I upgrading my stereo but the price of both was too much. So I went for a Kenwood unit. It has an unfusy design with not too many flashing lights. I also has the USB port in the back as most have the m in the front which is uselss. Now I have a 8GB stick packed full of music in the glove box where it is safe from being knocked.
Old head units look great but no USB port. I no longer have to carry CD's! This is in a 80's BMW.

I've run Infinity References in a few of my cars, they're not gaudy looking, and if you get some with crossovers so you have seperate tweeters they sound awesome, mine pack a right punch too

I'm probbaly going to just use an MP3 player connected direct to an amp. Though I'm having trouble finding a really simple, easy to use on the move, tactile player - with plenty of space!
Everything's so fussy these days, I just want something that plays music... not pictures, movies, camera etc etc!
