Well, after a significant break due to house moving and DIY and all the usual stuff I have finally blown the dust off the Ventora and started back into the bodywork. Due to persistant problems getting back on Photobucket from my home PC I'm having a go with Imageshack so hopefully this is going to do something like work. Basically where I left it last the welding was finished, but left the rear lower quarters looking a bit "frankenstein", so a dressing of filler was going to be needed. The rear arches have also been welded and need dressing off. I'm not entirely happy with the profile of the rear arches and also I discovered during the course of the day a small amount of heat distortion in the lower quarters. Guess if boils down to if you want a job doing best to do it yourself. I seem to have been working on this for ages. Started off by finishing the rubbing down of the work I'd started ages ago in the driver side arch. Needed refilling again after I'd finished that, and it needs another fill. You can sort of make out the dodgy profile in this shot, although this was quite early in the day. I really don't want to load up a lot of filler to try and "sculpt" the right profile from plod. I might have to resort to hammer and dolly if it doesn't go right soon. Then I stripped the last of the "stuff" which was on the lower quarters and fillered the driver side, then around the to passenger side to start work there. I also had a bash at the rear passenger door which has had a spot of welding done in one corner too. heres the driver side after the first flat back of the filler. You can see the low spots from here. Another load up needed tomorrow. passenger side... rear door... Last little jobs of the day was to fill a small deformation in the rear corner above one tail light and remove the aerial. I was fedup by this point so I took it off with the angle grinder when the nut was siezed... Full days work and not a lot to show for it in some ways but at least she's back on the boil. I can also understand the appeal of "ratlook" cars now where all this is unneccessary! Ah, my dream car LOL

well, you did more than I did , but then you could have changed a light bulb and done more than I did. pulled my transit essex heads out of the shed to lap the valves in, found they were so pitted the lapping tool won't stick to them. got depressed and stuck them back in the shed. whats the plan for the ventora? I have a friend whos building one with an sb chevy

mate your going to have more of these " ive done a days work and it looks no better " days trust me then after the paint goes on the the lights start going back in ull see and feel like your getting some where ! trust me it like that every job i do !

whats the plan for the ventora? I have a friend whos building one with an sb chevy Not that orange one which was on eBay by any chance? I did go down the SB Chevy route with a previous FD Victor, should never have sold that one really. This one I have three options... 1. Do somthing with the original straight six - wuld be different, cos nobody ever bothers doing that so much. 2. Use a different staight six & turbo out of something like a Supra or Skyline. (Senator motor has been done and its not that much gain for the effort) 3. Yank V8. Possibly Buick 350 if I can get hold of one. Although I havea 340 in my LeSabre I could swap in if I came across a 425 or 401 nailhead to go in the LeSabre instead...

I like the sound of this - get the 2.5 twin turbo out of a Soarer ;D ...or any nice straight six really. Even though it's lethargic, maybe Merc's bulletproof 2.5? Would be nice and in keeping with the car, in some respects.
What do you intend to use the car for?

Just general driving and smoking it about. Lets see if thumbnails work... This is the car when I first had it. Now she has stonechips everywhere. I think I drove this baby pretty hard for a few years LOL This is the last one I had with the mildly tuned Chevy V8. Was a 350 with a comp cam, roller timing, Rhodes lifters, Holley 4 barrel, custom stainless headers, loud dual side exits, B&M shifter, etc etc. And all done as a sleeper with the stock red vinyl bench seats in. I don't have aphoto of the finished engine bay but here it is mostly done.

Fine for me Alistair. What about a 2.6 straight 6 from a mid 90's Merc 260? My dad used to have one of them and I was always astounded by how well it went for its weight.

blimey. A guy I know pulled one from some guys garden "free if removed" and it actually fell in half in the middle it was so rotten.
Its got a 3.3 in it now so I'd not want to go smaller... Not without forced induction and even then I'm thinking a 3.0 Supra lump

Lexus V8 makes sense in that its light and has bullet proof internals. However I'm not sure how compact they are (width could be an issue) and its going to be a fag to hook it up with a manual box I think? Theres no manual flywheel for the V8 and I think they use a flex plate on the autos?) Also the stock ECU is one with a load of complicated stuff in it so you need an aftermarket one to run it, adding to the cost. Or so I have been told. Unless you know any better about it? Sounds like you have one already?
Any pics of your mates project?

Well, I've dealt with the filler on the passenger side and this has low spots too As does the arch and door corner I've also been resanding the roof to deal with some of the issues from the car being stored outside in primer.... check out that dust front corner of roof has some pitting to deal with - again. Been working on the passenger rear door and this is taking shape now. And getting into the door step where the sill has been welded in Luckily not to much problem up by the A post. Floors aren't too bad considering it was sat with the rear window popped out and the carpets were sodden. finally applied some more filler to build up the low spots. leave it a few days to harden with it being this cold I reckon. All good fun.

This dingwas typical of some of the roof bits, the factory never fixed defects like this on cars with vinyl tops. Its in a position almost impossible to bump it out from so I've filled it. This still needs sorting out.... This is the rear scuttle where the pitting is quite bad. I've done all the window channel if you look though. All new screen trim clips as well, they are well rare to get NOS. There are also the holes for the trim clips for the vinyl roof edge trim. Opinion is divided if these should be welded up or punched down and filled. We'll see. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Right, you will probably all be fed up with pictures of me applying and sanding filler - about as fed up as I am of doing it LOL. So heres some other stuff I did today. Decided to do some bits & bobs as I didn't have time to get stuck into it. Decided to take the bootlid ff, makes easier access to the rear scuttle area. Go on HIT IT HIT IT WITH A HAMMER! This is me knocking in the trim holes from the old vinyl roof. Still not 100% decided wether to weld them or fill them. Theres as many pros and cons with each really. So I knocked them in with a punch anyway to make it easier to flush whatever I do there. Pulled out the old kiddie belts from the back seat. These really are quite neat. They look like racing harnesses but they are shrunk in the wash (for little kiddies y'see). Now I wish I hadn't lost the top halfs... And it wouldn't be me if there wasn't a filler shot... reapplied all the filled areas, should have all the low spots out by saturday. Or maybe I'll cry.
