Really good to see that you have turned the corner and put all of the misfortune of 'unlucky 13' behind you.
You were right on the old shell too....there is absolutely nothing that could have been reused from it. The photo of the offside rear quarter is a good illustration of how the steel just loses all of its strength and sags almost under its own weight even without half the units roof sitting on top of it. Apart from the material weakness, you'd have been constantly battling with corrosion coming through on any of those parts.
It is a bit different when you are sharing a unit and other peoples cars and projects are also at risk, so I suggest a new rule.... nobody leaves the unit for at least an hour after doing any welding or other hot works. The fire extinguishers are a great idea, but someone still has to be there no notice a fire starting and actually use them on it.
I once came back to my garage to find that 'someone who will remain un-named but knows who they are' had rushed off and locked up but left an open 4.5 gallon can of cellulose thinners sitting quite close to a calor gas heater that they had brought over to heat the place, but also forgot to turn off when they left! As you might imagine I was not amused, but very glad that I'd checked how they were getting on.
I must have missed something, but there are now TWO sunbeam shells sitting in the unit?
Good stuff... I really admire your perseverance. Onwards and upwards.

The new unit is as heartening a development as the destruction of the old one was depressing. Posh instant coffee too!

Love this pic! Did some dubber sort try to rescue the VW camper, or were the panels on that also reduced to tearable by hand condition? Also, what is the silver saloon on the left in your new unit?

That silvery pool is my original 1970's Shelby slotmags Also interesting to note the spring completely compressed due to the heat

That's not too appalling, I expect you'll have it all done and dusted by the second Friday of February.

Congrats on getting up and going again...a few pretty harrowing pics of my old fleet.
Particularly liking the one of the Mk1 at the back, lowering springs still on the back 'seat'. I knew I'd put them somewhere...
I pass that way most Saturday mornings if you're about?

this morning after a nice chat with mr+mrs lard (and a dreadful cup of tea - i am a terrible host ) i found myself drawn to the non functioning hoist as a distraction from rust surveying. when purchased the components that actually lifted the car were missing, and the only pic of a working version seemed to have a couple of pieces of box section fudged on. this seemed a simple but inelegant solution so i have been searching for a clue as to the original configuration.
finally the search threw up the patent application for the lift.
this shows a couple of pieces of box strung across the lifting arms
this seemed an elegant and simple solution so i made it so a bit of wiring later and the lift was going up and down under its own steam the inaugural jar of coffee is running a bit low so i had to spread out my breaks with a spot of car pushing and lifting (and a fair amount of crunchy noises!) sorry for the shaky pics i accidentally knocked my camera out of idiot mode my camera then protested it was full so no more pics of the piles of rust mingled with my tears lots of ridiculously rusty bits and even more holes where similar bits used to be strangely there was no fear just the realisation i am going to need several donor sprinters this time total time spent - 47 hours (not including the long search for a clear surface in the workshop, a quick tidy up and a huge amount of shiftily watching mo working on his stuff, while achieving very little myself ) total spend £1600 (welding wire, abrasives, consumables, a £17.50 grinder but no metal? - what was i thinking )
