Didnt really know where to place this, so..(I seriously think we need a "general" non car/toy sub-forum..) I recently passed my counterbalance FLT training, after wanting to use one for over a year Taking some getting used to, its certinatly not like a car, which I initially thought before driving one! Anyone else use one?

I drive a wagon for a living, but load it myself.... I took my c/b test on a 1.5t Hyster, but usually drive a 7-tonne V6-powered Hyster at work, as well as a 14-tonne US-made Hoist with a propane-fuelled GM V8 lump......and this bloody monstrosity.... 1980's Hyster 15-tonner with VERY smoky Perkins 6.354 diesel, the turning circle of a cross-channel ferry, and no power steering. Sounds great, steering pulls your arms out, no side-shift so you HAVE to be accurate with it. It's actually quite fun to drive. I've had so much weight on those forks that it wouldn't steer and could pop wheelies. ;D

fork lifts are fun but how about a - 4 way travel reach truck- for some seriously wierd load moving will try and find a picture ttfn glenn curse word cant find any pictures but imagine a forklift which can jack itself up, turn its wheels to 90 degrees, drop down and then drive away sideways the ones i used to drive/repair were called hunslet lizard and had all sorts of chains for the steering with the electric motors as part of the wheels oh and the forks also moved in and out as well as up and down

My friend's dad used to drive a big Hyster like the one pictured above at work many years ago, but it had a Chrysler 360ci V8 small-block and a 4-speed. They took it down the highway at about 80km/h! Not bad for something with rear steer!

Wow..V6, V8? Bet they sound snorty as hell We just got a Gecco LPG C/B truck..has a 4-cyl. VW Polo engine lol. I really didnt realize the vast amount of lifting machines out there, tis surprising. I wouldn't mind becoming a forklift service/repair guy, but I guess I'd need mechanics NVQ's etc, which I don't I was taught not to use side shift, and wasn't allowed to use it on the test, but in out warehouse its an invaluable luxury.

I had an ancient LPG Toyota FG15 for about 10 years but I offered to lend it to a local firm down the road to dismantle their mezzanine floor, so I drove it the mile or so down to them and this broke the transmission. It never worked again and I had to buy another truck. Thats the last time I felt like feeling generous I now have a 1976 Lansing Bagnall 3 tonne with power steering and a perkins 4.108.

I've been driving them since I passed my test at 18. Where I work now we used to have this orange one but it needed new batteries so we traded it in instead,a real shame as it had side-shift and was smooth and very controllable. Our current one is this poxy little f**ker,it's either on or off so takes a lot of effort to control and has very limited ground clearance and inadequate tilt.So much for progress.

what on EARTH is that for? and whats the capacity? If you are talking about my brothers toy.... and he has a load, licensed to operate, service and train and examine on everything from compacters to construction cranes . He is in the military, and these are used for moving things like containers of hardware about etc. Has an attachment to top load or bottom load containers. Reach: 2 containers on top of each other. Tonnage: 35 metric tonnes capacity. Engine : 2 Stroke Diesel. Everything is bigger and badder in his unit

I have always worked on fork trucks (hence the name). Sarted out on smaller everyday ones and progressed to container moving equipment. I used to work for these people(until they made me redundant) And now I work on these I love it. Big boys toys every day. I've worked on most of the ones pictured above too

Although I'm an office bod, we're a small company, so I'm licenced to drive counter balance and often load/unload trucks when the Stores folks have gone home.
We've only a little 1.5tonne electric three wheeler though.
Was fun drifting it round the carpark when we had the snow back in January.

Use to work with a Linde diesel years ago.. was fun to drive as they have a forward and a reverse throttle pedal.. no side shift, but I worked at a building materials firm, so no real need to be precise.. looked like this: we once had a Komatsu for temporary while the Linde was in revision, we did some restacking with that and when the Linde came back it turned out that the Komatsu reached slightly higher than the Linde. So we had to take out 2 pallets of wood stacked on top of eachother at once on maximum reach.. We had to sit at the back with 3 guys to get the pallets out..
