First of all, bikes are ace. Don't fret - it is totally worth it. I think what everyone is trying to say is just be carful. I think we can all say we have lost someone to the world of biking, and there are precuations that can be taken to avoid tragedy. having said all of that, riding a bike is wicked fun and you shouldn't loose touch with the good side of biking. It is the dream of freedom that people enjoy all over the world, all the time, everyday. I (touch wood) have never had an accident on a bike in the 13 years I've been riding, and I can attribute that to some key facts. 1. Don't ride around like your always in a rush - this applies to all bikes - ped or super bike. A calm mind processes info with much more clarity. It is fact that you will get to your destination much quicker than a car becasue of traffic queues and lights ect. I see people all the time racing around people to get that extra second ahead - they are the ones, unfortunately, that will probably come a cropper. 2. Look out for cars and expect EVERYONE to be a total blind idiot - this avoids dissapointment when the next fool pulls out in front of you at a junction. It's happened to me more times than I can care to remember and I have escaped injury because you expect it. (look out for taxis and busses especially) 3. Protection - obvious. What you wear is your car - it is the only thing between you and tarmac - or cars, lamposts, trees ect ect..... and people bruise like peaches. 4. Make sure you keep the ped serviced - check that everything works before you leave. Enjoy it though dude. It's just a matter of training your eyes to scan for hazards before thay happen. This will only come with time and experience. Everyone is just trying to ensure you get to that stage unscathed, but it's not rocket science - just common sence.

Well, here I go as well....
You are 16, not thick etc.
Trust me when I tell you, I started riding t age 14, my brother was 12 at the time, and my dad would not let me buy a 50cc Honda MTB , so came back from boarding school on term break, and he had bought a Yamaha RD350 (Aircooled model) for us to play with. Never killed ourselves on that one, but 6 months later he had replaced it with 3 bikes, a 50cc Suzuki OR50, a TS125ER and a Honda 185XLS. This is when the fun started, I managed to do a double front flip on the 125, it also did a flip. That time I was dressed in shorts, T-shirt and sandals, with open face helmet.... one graze on my arm, and the helmet had part of the chain pattern imprinted on the back of it.
Today I can say I have ridden allsorts and have a BMW1200GS in the garage, and all the gear, having rider for 33years, I have fallen, dropped bikes and even flown of one, but generally been safe, and intact, 95% of my falls were my fault, and mostly Off road, as that was also always my thing.
However, I will probably never stop riding bikes, and my brother at age 44 still rides and has an 1150GS today, so bikes are and will always be fun.
Remeber all the gear, all the time ATGATT.
Beyond that, I would encourage anyone to buy bikes and ride them,as it is some of the best fun you will ever have with your clothes on.

Right, I may be 16 but I'm not completely thick, reckless and stupid. I will be getting gloves and a jacket, as soon as I can afford to. Helmet arrived and fits perfectly. Ped goes in the back of my dads car fit so I will not be driving to the mot. I do take in advice but do appreciate that I have some common sense. "Now then young man" (Said in a Brian Clough type voice) I don`t think any one is trying to frighten you or say you are a silly young man BUT like all who ride bikes you cannot take the safety message seriously enough. Always wear the best gear and spend all your pennies there as good gear will last a long time. I went to a meet the other night and one guy turned up on his bike wearing one of those German type helmets. I pointed out that they weren`t legal and he just laughed. Bet he doesn`t laugh when he gets a tug off the Cops or when he is bouncing down the road. I don`t like the thought of an open helmet but don`t like a full face that is why I wear a flip. Great looking ped and when you are old enough do the full bike test and be safe.

Well i thankyou for the replies, and i do understand all this.
I must say, i wouldnt touch one of those german style helmets with a barge pole, i know what you mean when hes 'bouncing down the road' because i certainly wouldnt want one on.

now we are clear on the safe way of enjoying bikes, it is time for the worst danger of all if you get addicted they will just about take over your life i started riding around the garden at 15 and i am now 49, and at no time between have i not had a least one bike hanging around my dad died in his 90s and whenever he mentioned his brough superior, which he had to give up in 1963, he got that wistfull look in his eyes, he still missed it 30 years later! ttfn glenn

A brough superior! Now thats a fine machine!
Anyway D&O, hows the build going? Any updates? have you looked into a mallosi kit? I doubt you can get one for the melody, but you never know with Honda - there may be a piston kit that might change over, and ther'll definately be an exhuast you can wang on there and a nice filter...

Its basically there, i sorted the stand out as i said, all i need to do is complete the seat. We got it half done, i destapled it, removed the old cover and put the new one on, but then out stapler (its electric and everything) wouldnt penetrate the plastic. so the cover is clamped in place but needs glueing. I've got some contact adhesive ready to go, i've just got to go and do it. No malossi don't do a kit, i had a look, but if you do find a tuning mod i could do, do go ahead and post

two stroke tuning is pretty simple all you need is a selection of files, some grinding paste, expansion chamber and a carb from a larger 2stroke and possibly an ignition black box but first get it on the road and enjoy ttfn glenn

Not a good idea.

Ok some interweb work turns out that it in fact isnt restricted as such, its that its built to go 30. Teamed with that and the fact they arent as commonly used as other honda mopeds mean you cant get tuning parts for them. So i think i'm gunna buy myself a secondhand cheapy expansion pipe, and weld that to the original pipe (as you cant get one for a melody obviously).
Also, apparently a honda vision 80cc carb fits, so i'll do that if i can.
But thats something for the future, after i turn 17 i'd like to swap the engine for something with better parts availibility and that way it would be easier to tune.

It can be a bit hit or miss when welding on different pipes, have you got a spare if it goes wrong? the sooner the engine swap the better, spent the day dicking around with the rollers and clutch springs of my runner 180, what an awesome engine

Right, anybody know where i can get one of these? Saved from a thread in this very section which was on some of the very last pages, couldnt find it again though. Its a flyscreen specifically for the melody i would imagine, except in that picture the plastic screen is snapped off i would beleive. They never come up on ebay, so has anyone got one? or know anyone that has one? Its always worth an ask on here because you never know.

unless your barrel and piston is fubarred a rebore plus 1 mm isnt going to gain you anything, and the add boasting "taiwanese quality" dosent exactly inspire confidence if you want a porting job done on your barrel and cannot find anyone near to you how about a bit of rr pony express to get the barrel and head to me and i will run the burrs and files over it for you ttfn glenn

1mm overbore is not worth it, get glen to do a job on the ports (no idea if he is any good, another barrel can't cost that much if it all goes wrong, can it?) second can you find lighter rollers and harder clutch springs for your melody?
