Next up from me is the 1000hp Turbonique rocket turbine axle: Click for big promo pic...Developed in the 1960's by Turbonique it's a rocket engine that spins a turbine, geared down and powering the axle. During the 60's the axle dominated drag racing until it was outlawed as up to 1000hp was on tap without the weight of an engine up front. 1000hp VW BEETLE axle!!! The promo Beetle beating the top twin engined dragster of the time: The more conventional rocket turbine axle: They did a rocket powered supercharger too, I'll post some about that later when I've got time.

Ok, the turbonique rocket supercharger: Similar principle to the rocket turbine axle, you have a small rocket powering a turbine. This time the turbine drives a compressor which acts as a supercharger ramming as much air and fuel into the engine as it can. It's an absolutely mental piece of kit which comes up on eBay every now and then. I like the "guaranteed split-second 100% horsepower boost with the flick of a switch!" Sort of puts the power boosting cack we see on the bay these days to shame. This crazy stuff actually did the job! More about Turbonique here, here and here

My favorite motor..... Some funny guy working with the Porsche Carrera Pan Americana team in the late 50's hung a sign up, Wanted: one asbestos octopus needed for spark plug chages, It's easier to dropp the motor to chage pluggs that even try with it in.....

nice to see I got all the info on the bm engines wrong! ha! that'll teach me for reading american books (power in sae?). more to salivate over not retro, I know. but a 1000bhp m3 motor!?!? 25k to you and me. best bit is its in a stock bodied m3 4dr on stock rims. M power sleeper? another turbo F1 motor, this time by renault apparently can make 550bhp on pump petrol (5 star?). pub trivia: louis renault patented the idea of turbocharging in 1909 the daddy in my book, shorrock 'charged a series circa 1960 this is george beales master piece of complexity, his reproduction of the 1967 junior TT winning 300cc honda engine. produces 65bhp @ 17000 rpm that is a euro coin and visa card for size ref. not sure if this is a p-shop, experimental bmw v8 made from 2 m10 engines in 1982 and fitted in an e23 (if thats real!)

the daddy in my book, shorrock 'charged a series circa 1960 This one is out of a Moggy Minor or Austin A35 - I really want a Shorrock (will only happen in my dreams....) for my Sprite - apparently they halve the 0-60 time ;D Shorrock + 998 @ 7000 rpm = A favourite of mine, the Bonner V6 - 5.8 litre, quad cam, 24 valve, all gear driven ancillaries & 550bhp on the first dyno run over 15 years ago ;D As installed in an ADA race car Turbocharged marine version for Class 1 Offshore Powerboat racing (850 - 900 bhp) And finally, another Bonner engine, the Super Sapphire V6 This one was intended for light aircraft, and was CAA certified, but remained a one-off due to the economic climate at the time (early '80s). It was an all alloy version of the Ford Essex V6.

Some interesting stuff in this thread, keep it up chaps.
[O/T] Does anyone happen to know where i may acquire detailed blueprints/design drawings of a Subaru Impreza flat 4 engine?
Cheers

You can say what you like about Rover 214s but for me the K-series is a modern classic, still ahead of the majority of the car industry even today in terms of its architecture. Here is a superb article about it and its supposed weaknesses. www.sandsmuseum.com/cars/elise/thecar/engine/kingk.html

ENGINES!! ;D ;D ;D ;D Some great pics and tech info there, really enjoyed looking & all those pics of some mighty engines, turbos & superchargers My Fav engine is the Bristol Centaurus 18 cylinder radial slide valve aero engine... Which powered amongst other aircraft the Hawker Sea Fury (incidentally a development of the afore mentioned Typhoon/Tempest) The Fury being arguably the ultimate piston engined fighter plane, is one of my favourite planes - despite being unfortunate enough to witness the fatal accident involving Paul Morgan (the 'more' in Illmor) In his Sea Fury - nosing over after landing

The drag racers amongst us are probably wondering why no-one has mentioned the Top Fuel V8 as featured in dragsters and funnycars! I can't find a picture of a current spec engine with twin magnetos and the triple butterfly carbon fibre intake, but many will recognise this as the definitive fuel burning hemi: The top fuel V8 has looked like this since the 70's with the ally intake and three red butterflies. The supercharger is wrapped in a kevlar vest to prevent any bits flying out if it explodes and the straps are there to stop it flying into the crowd when they sometimes backfire and shoot the blower into the sky. I've seen it happen myself! The engine developes in excess of 5000 horsepower by using nitromethane as fuel and compressing the cylinder charge until it is almost completely liquid again. Naturally this is also a recipie for disaster, using a rocket fuel and compressing it to near detonation point and explosions happen on a regular basis, but that's what's required to accelerate a car from standstill to 330mph in just 4.5 seconds!!!
