So... I'm going for this job, which sounds great but would mean an 80 mile round trip each day, 80% motorway driving. I'm thinking that this is going to need a diesel, and a comfy cruiser at that. Will have the old Golf for occasional smart use but I fancy something stylish, retro, relaible and of course cool. The first thing that popped into my mind was... of course a Pug 505 GTD anything else?

Might I suggest LPG power? Opens up your possibilities no end, I do 30K plus a year in retro stuff over 15yrs old on LPG. Far better than a rattly old oil burner...

hmm lpg. Not as fuel efficient as derv but cheaper to buy. I wonder how the figures stack up. Would have to rely on buying sommat thats been converted properly to get the reliability though.

That skoda is an absolute bargain, although I am not sure it would much like the 80 miles per day you need it for. If it was closer, and I was less overdrawn I would go for it. As for suggestions, how about an LPG Toyota Camry? Retro cruiser and comfy as hell.

I run a Volvo 240 2.3, it does 25mpg on petrol and roughly 22mpg on LPG. It's approx half price of petrol, giving an equivalence of 44mpg if running on LPG but using petrol prices. I bought the Volvo ready converted for £600 all in and in twelve months usage and 22K I've had a cold start injector go and that's it. You might find a 205 diesel that'll do 44mpg for that sort of money, but not one with leather, 'leccy toys oh and it came ready lowered on Bilsteins with a set of 16s. It's quicker than a 205 too. Through the Volvo OC it's cheap to insure too. I bought it to try out the whole LPG thing, and now I'm a convert having spent £1600 to get my M6 motored E28 converted just before Christmas. ;D

I would never call you stupid, but when you're looking at doing heavy miles each day, a small car just doesn't cut it. I considered a Lupo TDi with all the toys at one stage, but then I woke to the expense and saw what I else I could get. That and the road holding (side wind effect) and safety issues of smaller cars are an issue... I saw an E28 that had been hit hard (head on collision, the BMW was doing 60mph) on the front corner, the doors still opened and the steering wheel and pedals had moved about an inch or two. I somehow don't think a Fiesta would fare as well. Big cars. They're not just for show...

Yes. What with going up and down the motorway each day I'd want wafty comfort not buzzing noise so it would have to be a cruiser. 505 looking pretty good as it has legendary ride comfort and is simple and almost indestructable, although parts can be hard to find. Also cheap as chips at the mo.

Ok, I was just thinking of starting a thread before i saw this one. Yesterday in my dad pearls of wisdom (not the person i try take contradictory advice off BTW) said while taking reference to my latest rust bucket and awaiting 3.5 litre Sierra - which is meant to be my new daily driver all rounder! he said, why don't you get a diesel. i'm like cos they are boring to drive! and i pointed out its a very light car and i use a bmx for dayto day short distances. plus my ex diesel engineer mechanic said they were curse word and horrid/expensive to fix and shouldnt be going all speeds on motorway by nature, but saw him tooling around in a diesel 406 yesterday! Big vs small; if motorways are involved i wouldnt step back from a Sierra sized thing now after rattling in polos micras and fiestas, its hangs onto the road, cruises like a good un and is comfy enough. although i would like to see more miles for my quids though for my utility work trips. I was getting ideas about a custom xsara picasso work motorway basher yeterday, , shame on me!!! FWD mainly puts me off though maybe irol has the answer LPGing my Sierra best of both worlds!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts
