I've driven one of those diesel Scorpio's and they're pretty lively. It uses the same Pug-derived motor ats the turbo-diesel Trannys, so if the motor goes bang, a replacement should be easy to get. My old twin-cam Sierra ( 2.0 DOHC with carb) used to give me 40mpg on a run without really trying.

Be careful, its only the old granada 'taxis' which use the Pug-derived indenor unit (like what is in my 504 truck!) Later (1992-on?) versions + bug-eyed ones use a VM 2.5 which is a great engine but the bits are expensive to fix it when it goes wrong…. Anyone know what power they are rated at in the Scorpio?

Yeah - a three or five series beemer with a 'TDS' badge on the back would be my choice too - but watch your speed on motorways A pug 405 Dturbo would run a close second and would possibly be cheaper to insure and fix if things went wrong Otherwise the 505 would seem to be an excellent and different choice.

Nope. 1800, 2000 & 2500cc petrol engines only in the tourings. There are a few 324td e30 saloons in the UK, but these are all import jobbies as it was never officially sold here.

Haha, yeah, an update of what's been getting them around would be cool.
Would I be right in thinking that the LPG equipped Volvo 240 bryns talking about is now Bens Brown Volvo?

I tried to work that out when I saw the dates and I reckon it probably is. It has to be the worst LPG install (as in badly set up, not dangerous) evAr. Maybe it has got worse between Bryn, Si, Joe and me. It was totally untouched before I started to upgrade everything on it. ;D

I've had a few Pug 306 D-Turbos and I can't recommend them highly enough. Great fun down the backroads, decent cruisers, nice to look at, pennies to buy and insure, and the best thing about them is the XUD9 engine. 50 mpg plus on a run, lovely turbo kick at 3000 revs, a tweak to the turbo and fuel pump takes them from 90 bhp to 110-120 bhp and 190 ft lbs, and Bosch pumped cars will run pure veg easily! Look for overheating/HG issues, juddery clutch, whining turbo, knocking back axle bushes, warped discs and dodgy electrics like any French car cgi.ebay.co.uk/1996-PEUGEOT-306-D-TURBO-BLACK-/270686787576?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3f063097f8
