over the course of the fibreglassing workshop at area 52 this weekend, myself, stealthstylz and colonelK found ourselves discussing those crazy assed skandinavian guys who fling those v8 powered jeeps up the side of a quarry for laughs - you might remember hammond from topgear was despatched to investigate them at some point we got to the point where we'd bench built a budget one with chevy blazer axles, a 2 speed auto powerglide and a cut out chevy v8 motor - spaceframe chassis (though some seem to use a box section ladder chassis with a cage ) - and some fibreglass panels - throw it in for an IVA and away you go! - we even got as far as musing about using a jago geep body cut down!! anyway, a bit of googling has led me to believe that the series is called 'formula off road' - and is suitably mental! ^^ OMG ^^ that one has the guy from the topgear lakes run in it - and checkout the last guy who runs - who's helmet comes off I'm now off to check ebay for a jago geep body and chassis, and a rotten blazer - before mark gets there! - feel free to add some pics of the ones you can find kfw

I think there must be something in area fiddy two that makes mad ideas come to light - either that or it's the fibreglass fumes - or possibly the level of cow intake...
buggered the pics up though - I'll resize them now

Fomula off road originated from Island, not Scandinavia. Here in Norway atleast we've got very strict rules about venturing off road (basically it's not allowed to put a wheel outside the road shoulder at all. But in Island on th eother hand off roading is allowed, almost encourage. Google for "Arctic truck" (an Islandic 4x4 specialist) and all sorts of mind blowing veichles will turn up.

Interesting a lot of the ones in the pictures are double seats, whereas in the videos they are mainly single seaters. (watched some more.... a real mix actually0 From studying the videos a lot do appear to be ladder chassis with a cage. (watched some more, a lot of tube frame ones too) Ive got an idea of how to make one that wouldnt need IVA either If you do build it I want a go!!!! Have some more vids.... Also found www.4x4.is but sadly its not fully up and running Do you see what I mean by the tires as well? haha!

I was thinking you could probably base one on a swb landy? - though I still can't get past a jago Geep - ladder frame with a great big cage on it - body trimmed off at the beltline, with a little flat sheet of ally on the top of the cage - body quite low - but HUGE wheels, and a big WIDE track!
the more I watch the vids, the more I want one!

i've wanted to try this since i was in my early teens (got me some SERIOUSLY weird looks!! )
I was thinking you could probably base one on a swb landy
now Thats almost toooo tempting (especially as i have a surplus of them, And a 3.5 Rv8... )

Wouldn't a 100" Range Rover rolling chassis be better? SWB are too short and LWB too long . You've got all the basics ripe for fun from the start with the Range Rover, then you can progressively upgrade as you go, theoretically without the need for the IVA. I don't think it would be too hard to extend the steering column/ rods so that you could sit nearer to the middle or rear?

V-V - c'mon, a 3.5 rover's going to be a bit wee for something like this surely??
- I think the more pressing matter is finding a wiiiiide set of rubber for the 10x15"s you'd need to be running
keep those ideas coming though yeah??

I was thinking the same as Sowen, 100inch coil sprung would be more ideal as a base. Add full cage with driving position further back(driver just in front of rear axle) so the weight distribution is slightly better, move engine&box back(like my 109" V8) and simply ally panel over the cage pipework. Axles would have to be american Dana as Volvo stuff is too expensive and prob not strong enough for heavy drops at full throttle My 2p's worth Steve

It's the Stig's Icelandic cousin!! ;D
also you might be right on the 3.5Rv8.
which is possibly a good thing as that's the biggest engine i have (well, there's my brothers perkins 4236 in the Range Rover in front of mine...)
hehehe

lolz at the stig's icelandic cousin - it's rumoured his right foot is four times heavier than his left, and that he only eats ice...
do like the the 100" idea - but volvo axles are pretty budget friendly - I ws only thinking chevy stuff as you'd be able to get a matching steerable front end for it

I think the more pressing matter is finding a wiiiiide set of rubber for the 10x15"s you'd need to be running Kev, I think you need to look for something a bit wider than 10" for the icelandic effect.....I'm running 10" wide on the Delica and they might look wide compared to most cars....but compared to those cliff climbers?? Think more along the lines of those 'things' I have stored in the racking and you're starting to get nearer. This HAS to be built BTW. Might even be able to offer some space soon if you, Mark, Matt, Adam and anyone else party to the resin/acetone induced hallucination instigated ideas session fancy getting involved? I think you might be wanting to get in touch with JamesP pretty soon ;D ;D

, i am now going to have to get my stupid body in the direction of area 52, been obsessed with these for years but it vanished off sky . It's basically a promod drag car on big suspension when you look into it, some are running nearly 2000bhp from what i read with the nitrous switched on. YES they are crazy ;D
