These aren't actually off-road tyres, they are selling sand drag paddles. Very different beasts. This company sells you just the kevlar/rubber paddle, which you glue onto drag slicks for use on Top Fuel/Top Alcohol rail dragsters and other drag cars for use in sand drags. Wouldn't last five seconds on an off-road hill-climber.

Driving in to work this morning I saw a pile of wide plant machinery tyres with dumper style tread in a local tyre fitters. Looked something like 16x16 possiby! Maybe a cheap/sensible option for rubber?

OMG - some epic replies here boys
dean - I'd forgotten all about my local stuff - I seem to remember seeing off road buggies running on those huge slag heaps up near the horseshoe pass near llangollen?
sowen - good thinking on plant rubber, as you could maybe get a road legal one?
- and bruce, yeah realised I should have written a MINIMUM of 15 x 15!

I've been tempted to build something silly like this for years, but more based on the Bowler Tomcat / Wildcat style, and watching Mad Max hasn't helped either. In Thunderdome most of the vehicles had heavy plant machinery tyres fitted and they all looked amazing. I could make a few enquiries to see what sorta sizes they come in, nothing guaranteed tough

I think basically I'd be a red neck.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

I use to watch the Channel4 program about FO racing, we went to Iceland on Honeymoon but sadly the championship was off the Island racing in Sweden so never got to watch it However the terrain out there is insane, you can see why they need monsters to climb the cliffs when the roads are like this... ...this is not a country lane, that is Route One, its a road that goes round the out edge of the island and is the equivalent of the M25, its 900 miles round and about 25% is like this, the rest is just two lane tarmac. Are hire car had a 2" lift kit and an armoured sump and exhaust guard and gravel rally tyres on it ;D

Obviously depending on IF and WHEN this is likely to start happening and what you choose axle-wise, i have a L/R PAS box sat in the garage that I'm willing to donate to the project if its any good to you

What an awsome sport. Can't help thinking there's a whole lot of luck involved in any top o' the hill sucess. Top throttle control will go a long way granted but it's not like you can weight the front like you can on a bike to stop yourself flipping at the top. Looks a hella lot of fun

If it helps and you decide to create this beast, I have a TH350 box out of a 1974 blazer with an np203 (I think) transfer case attached, power steering box and a few other bits that might be of use from the same vehicle... I do have some Blazer axles too, but I'm keeping them as spares for now, sorry

Actually, colonelk, perhaps you were right after all. It would appear that perhaps some of these formula off-road cars do use slicks with glued-on paddles, although perhaps only for those mad water events? Speedman's photo shows them clearly in use:

Yep. 31" tyres are a good size for a Suzuki Sierra, but not for a real 4wd! Here's a Suzuki on 31" tyres Hilux on 33" tyres 42" Mud Terrains on a Jeep Wrangler. Now we're talking!
