i've just been to look at an astra GTE but it only had the bottom half of the engine and the lady who's house it's at couldn't tell me any thing about it (belongs to her son who's out of the country).
just wondering if any one could give me some advice on what to look for to tell if it's an 8v or 16v? 2 things i noticed were that it had rear disc breaks and the digi dash, but i know nothing about Vauxhalls so i don't know if these came on all GTE's or not?
any help on this would be much appreciated ;D

Its an easy swop to discs so that doesent really tell you anything and both 8 and 16v came with the digi clocks. Best bet is engine number,Next to the dipstick on the block where it meets the gearbox.Or the pistons.8v ones have a dish in the tops.16v ones have the 4 cutouts for the valves.

Astra GTE 16v had GTE16V on the tailgate. Dead give away. The little symbol is 'Connelly Leather', which came in the GTE Champions (only in Burgundy). 8v just had GTE on the back: 8v and 16v are similar blocks. 8v is a good engine, and the car will be less shafted. These cars are lovely looking things. There's usually loads of white unmolested ones in ebay with standard alloys.

16v had the double tail pipe too.
My brother had more than 16 astra's, I would ask him, but sadly he's no longer with us.
Good luck with it

You don't see that many xe blocks for sale unless damaged. You get plenty of piston/rod sets on ebay tho from people converting to turbo. You can use ecotec blocks and full xev engines can be had for 100 quid or there abouts.Full xe engines are about 250-350. The xe block is easy to rebuild too with new shells/rings ect and then at least you know you`ve got a good one.

was going to say 16v had double pipes on back box and 8v single. any interior pics? often the 16v had what was called rainbow seats (stripes were diagnal multi coloured) often the 8v were grey with red vertical stripes 8v were 2.0 XE engines (same as a mk3 SRI), think pre D reg were 1.8 16v were 2.0 C20LET or eco tec. LET always had a slight edge on the eco tec. although out of the 8v and 16v i owned the 8v was deffinatly the most reliable, managed to blow the head twice on the 16v flew well when it was on the road

Ummm, slightly wrong ^^^^^^ 8valve was the 1.8(18ne) and 2.0 (c20ne/seh 115/130bhp) 16valve was 20xe/c20xe 147bhp The LET was the turbocharged variant of the 16valve fitted to the the cavalier and calibra. Just a minor correction Steve

Pretty sure the tailpipe thing is right, not sure on the trim. Generally i don't look at trim, as long as it has a drivers seat and a steering wheel i don't look any further ;D Steve Oh, and wecome to RetroRides retrochic

yeah we knew about the tail pipes but although this car had twin pipes it was an after market system so knew that could mean any thing.
the only thing we were told about the engine was 'the pistons had gone' so whether it was as simple as just warn rings or it melted a piston i don't know. waiting for an email back from the owner to find out more.

Don't go by the seats. My mate had a 8v with the rainbow trim. This was done when new at the factory.I have seen a lot of 8v's with the 16v's interior. The steering wheels is one way to tell (again this could of been changed). The 8v has GTE in the center cap and i think is NOT a leather wheel. The 16v has GTE 16v in the center cap and IS leather.

I think the only clear cut way to find out what youve got is as someone has already said is to check the engine number. It will be marked on the block, on the edge facing the bellhousing. Should be something like "18e 3323232323" its those 3/4 digits at the front that you want to know.
