I was bored at work today and started thinking... How new can a retro car be? I know its welcome here if its cool enough, but i was thinking of cars that i think of as moderns, but if they were people, they would be old enough to drive. F'rinstance... So instead of capris/heralds/corsairs, does anyone have any thoughts on the newest 'retro' you can think of? Horace

The Corsa could do with its toenails trimming, then it'll fit, eg: Google Images tells me this is a 'slammed mk 5 Escort': Cool. I'll go with that if that's what Google says it is ;D

Very good question this and i don't even know if there is an answer that everybody will agree on, some will say a car that is no longer in production could be classed as a retro sooner than a car that may still be in production but with new model looks??? When does a Golf become modern???

none of them are retro, yet.
there appears to be some confusion between the words 'retro' and 'scene'.

I don't think there is definite answer to this, very subjective. To me, no, most of the cars you have shown are not what I would call old but they may be to the next bloke. Oh, and also, we probably shouldn't care what is and what isn't. Here are some pics of something definitely old and defintely floating my boat instead -

I was thinking about this at work the other day, speaking to one of the apprentices, i've a few old cars, but to him the 90's are retro..... Remember 1990 is 20 years ago now!!! Retro by definition is 'in the past' so if you're in your early 20's, the 90's will be the stuff you remember from being young, same with myself being born in '81, i regard things from the 70's / 80's as retro, i think i have more of a mindset to it though!

I think it depends on the car really. Certain things become retro faster than others. I'd consider the Probe retro as it was a bit of a flop (Not that I'd define retro cars as ones that flop of course), but an Escort of the same year to just be old...
But that's just me.

depends on your age and perspective. See I was horrified to realise 1990 was 20 years ago. It kinda seems like yesterday to me. I put anything 199x as a "modern" car. I don't see it as "old" unless its kinda pre-1980 (although stuff like the Mini, 2CV, Capri, Cortina etc. get a pass until 198x whenever they stopped making them. Actually, the Mini is a funny one as they can be old and modern at the same time.

I was horrified to realise 1990 was 20 years ago. Exactly. I think 'retro' is largely subjective. We're dangerously close to this being a 'what makes a car retro?' thread, but let's see how it pans out...

[PERSONAL OPINION] As has been said, it's all subjective. I am of the mindset that anything with plastic bumpers is not really retro. Some VERY early 80's ones fall into the "so close my mind/taste will allow it". A modern car (plastic bumpers) can have a retro 'vibe' to it... but it still don't count. That Corsa is still chav to me. These are the only retros so far in this thread...as the rest are Bangers to me... [/PERSONAL OPINION]

Your car is not 'epic', this thread is not 'epic'....the OCEAN is epic, the UNIVERSE is epic.... please stop misusing this word!! It would appear Hotrods are the new VWs - aint fashion funny! '69 BUICK LESABRE 350

Ok, good discussion, i'm happy! The reason i started thinking about it is because i was parked behind a very clean K reg Saab 900, in white, Saab 9000(?) cross-spoke alloys and a nice RR sticker in the window. It looked retro to me, in a street full of 2 year old meganes, focuses (foci?) etc, and it looked lovely. I agree though, its subjective, and if you only have the skillz/funds to lower your £200 b3 audi 80, then kudos. Even the hardcore, 'post-war is hi-tech' brigade have to admit, you're living the dream! Its all good though, cos thats why we all get along! (with ne'er a cross word) Horace

1989 is the cutoff for me, taste and design since then has just been, well, dead. Most eighties cars are a tad modern for me, even then! But each to their own, most people I work with can't imagine using cars without assisted steering, or indeed electric windows!

I think it all depends on how old you are. To me it's the cars I aspired to own one day when I was a kid, but then I was born in 1981...
What's important to me is that on this site it doesn't matter, because everything has potential

I don't think there will ever be a definative answer. It does depend a lot on how old you are.it also means different things to different people. If you asked a lot of the general public to name a retro car they would think of the Nissan Figaro or new Fiat 500. Some on the forum weren't born when the Mondeo came out,so would probably consider it retro.I think its basically what you grew up with as kid and look back on with fondness !
For me as a 60's child its primarily cars of that era and the 70's.I'd probably class a Ford Probe as retro though, definitely no hard and fast rules !
