From what i remember of my mk1 i had a similar issue with cooling ben/ becky. I thought i had a big boss sender in the rad however which is a lot more common for a fan switch. Watch the rad if still a steel one as when i tried to remove hoses to flush it the neck for the hose split out the tanks.
If you go to a propper factors you should be able to get rad fan switches in different temps, changed the corrado one for a lower temp one and it made the world of diference.
Keep up the good work ;D

matt: does this mean you are going to be working at the big 'M'?
had a bit of a boo boo tonight...
lost all engine power...everything cut out mid journey.. so i quickly rolled onto a pavement as i couldn't do much else. turns out it was 2 wires going to the battery that had burnt out due to a previous bodge!!!
i phoned ben who came to the rescue! and robinJI appeared from nowhere, never having even met him before.. thanks again!
we connected everything up again (i originally thought it was a fuse but was wrong)
pulled away and realised i had twatted my exhaust as i 'rolled' onto the pavement and it had snapped the downpipe which was grinding the floor...
pulled over again to remove the exhaust. it sounds like a tractor but we will very very soon be sorting that out. Robin appeared again. I think Ben thanked him 5 or 6 times!
oh and did i mention it was raining ;D good times.
we had fish and chips as we pulled into bens which made everything okay again ;D

From what she was saying on the phone.. I reckoned whoever put in the push button start had somehow butchered into the fag lighter wiring and a fuse had blown. Turned up, checked voltage at battery and made a confused face when RobinJI (never met or had any communication with at all before) turns up and offers a hand. Connections are made when he spots the Area52 stickers dotted about. Whilst I was making blank faces and running through potential problems in my head, Robin jumped in and went 'Ah, found your problem'. Two big red wires that should go to the battery had been spliced together with a single tiny black wire going to the battery instead. It acted like a fuse. That's the first problem solved.
The other issue was Becky hitting the kerb mighty hard with her exhaust and snapping it clean off just below the manifold. Going to give it a tickle tomorrow with a bit of luck...

Glad to see you guys got home ok, it was an eventful trip. You forgot to mention the car not starting again once the exhaust was out of harms way. haha. Me and Ben somehow managed to knock the live off the starter-motor while wriggling the exhaust out from under the car, which led to lots of swearing at the alarm system, then an 'oh curse word that's not plugged in is it' kinda moment. Was nice to meet you guys, even if the circumstance's were far from perfect.

WOW! A Retro Rides chance mini-meet!
So cool to hear people stopping to help other retro motorists in need. All the better they turn out to be from the same forum. Just wonderful....puts a smile on my face and a warm glow in my heart just thinking about it.
Sorry to hear about the woes. Glad you got it sorted and I am sure the exhaust can be Bengineered back on without too many dramas? You know where to bring the car if you need Ben & Becky.
Robin, please feel free to follow Ben up to A52 sometime where you will be treated to some free stickers, some free ramp time and some good ol' MM brew as a thank you for your kind help to my friends.
God I love this place!

Robin, please feel free to follow Ben up to A52 sometime where you will be treated to some free stickers, some free ramp time and some good ol' MM brew as a thank you for your kind help to my friends. God I love this place! I was praising A52 highly when we got chatting and insisted that he come up.. If nothing else me and Bec owe Robin a beer ;D I took this morning off work so we could get it sorted straight away (though it was surprisingly quiet on open headers ;D) The snap on the exhaust was really clean and in such a shape that I just plonked them back together and got funky with the arc welder (Retro welding FTW! I'm actually getting pretty good on it now but I am on the lookout for a good mig), covered the join in VHT paint and put the exhaust back on with one of the poly mounts and one standard donut mount because I cut one off in frustration last night and had a standard one in stock.. But since it's Becky's car, and her responsibility.. she set to work on the cause of the original fault, two big red wires that had been bodged to the battery in a past life with a tiny piece of black wire and a ring terminal. She soldered in some extensions in a nice heavy gauge wire, heatshrinked it nicely, and soldered some suitably sized ring terminals to connect them back up to the battery. Much more tidy and professional looking. And it won't burn out. She's driving home now and I haven't had a phonecall yet so looks like we should be OK!

Just had to post up to say I've just read the thread from start to finish and it's been a really good read! Cheers for all the updates. Oh, and good to read how helpful all you South West RR'ers are! All going to plan, we'll be living in Taunton by the end of the year so good to know!

Good seeing you again today Becks Thanks for all the tea Here are the pics I took of the Fiesta today, thought you might like them up here Ben, fidning crusty holes after trying to jack the car up and noticing an unexpected repair was required: Splodge that was part-holding the arch-spats on While Ben was busy melting some metal to the sills with Becks supervising I offered her the old chrome foglights off my van. After a quick offer-up we decided this needed to be done Meanwhile, Ben has a made a hole: Not for long I immersed myself with putting lights on other peoples cars which is my favorite pastime acording to Bruce Took the front bumper off and found one stud snapped off and one cross threaded so after a quick repair of the bumper mounts, and a used of Si (B8D's) improv metal folder we had some brackets that mount under the bumper mounts so no extra holes were incurred By now Ben was getting close to finishing up the sill. Bit of zinc primer and black for the journey home: And some lights! I must say at this point what a good job Ben did of the sill considering it was his first time tackling rusty sill repairs (he will be along shortly I'm sure to say it was rubbish but it wasn't ) Anyway, laters guys!

thanks very much for posting these pictures! awesome day! thanks again for the lights rich.
got a few things to do before the gathering...
- spray rear valance - fill, grind, spray the new weld. - interior.. (few screws missing from things) - footwell panels need to be cut out and sprayed (the old ones were chipboard!) - rust repair around windscreen.
thanks again bruce for your hospitality and ben for your awesome welding ;D

Computer commandeered from Bec.. Cheers for putting those up, Rich. You're right, I will say my welding is rubbish. Sort of.. The outer skin repair 'sunk' slightly so will need a bit more filler than I would have liked, but I am happy that it's all together much better than it was before, without rust! The fact that it was my first real attempt at bodywork welding (rather than blasting fat stuff for fun), and I was under time constraints, mean that overall I'm satisfied that it's OK. I'd also like to point out that Rich's pictures make it look like I cut off the outer skin and welded a plate over, hiding all that rust underneath, but I actually welded in 4 separate layers And the lights look excellent. If you're going to going to give me vacuum gauges and lights to my loved ones, I'll have to throw you bits of Volvo more often

If you happen to have made any templates... Loving this thead so far! It's helping me build up the courage to tackle my Mk1.

I'm afraid I was too busy wielding an angle grinder and eurotorch to have thought about taking pics I'm afraid. It really was as simple as cutting out rust from each layer, and replacing it with sheet metal that I cut and shaped with hammers, grinders and a metal folder. I had to do four pieces.. The outer skin (metal folder was incredibly useful here, though not essential), the front of the inner sill, the back of the inner sill and a random triangular piece behind the sill. I need to do a patch on the end (inside the wheelwell) too, but couldn't get the wheel off because of a misplaced locking wheelnut tool. I'll do it soon. In more current news.. Got a call from Bec the day before yesterday informing me that she thought an engine mount had gone. It's hard to get into gear and the whole engine/gearbox unit rocks a lot when you drive it. Had a quick look and there are two engine/box mounts. One at the front, one at the back. Job for the weekend . I assume it's hard to get into gear because with it moving about, the gear selector rod suddenly becomes the wrong length.

But without getting it on a ramp, I can't get the leverage on the rear one to do it myself so unfortunately it's going to be farmed out to a local garage to do. It's annoying because it's such a simple job.. But it shouldn't take a garage more than an hour to do it for Bec.

So it went to the garage.. Turns out bolts that hold the engine and transmission in have been worming their way out, leaving those that are left under enough stress that they sheer. Marvellous. The garage did a sterling job of wanging new bolts in and now the engine doesn't rock at all
