Yay! Nearly ready for the road, very cool and a cheap MOT fail - RESULT ;D £6.50 in wiper blades and a splash of brake fluid ;D Sorted the bush thing on the shock this evening with Becky helping/supervising/inserting witty and smutty comments about bushes. Which just leaves headlamp aim. Since it's not technically allowed on the road, and don't have a nice flat wall and level surface on which to set them, the garage will be sorting that for the retest on Friday.. Sorted

We have the Ministry of Transport's approval ;D Time to concentrate on making the interior a bit nicer and fixing any crusty bits now that spring is nearly upon us Pictures when it's being used and it's daylight and stuff

We must be due an update.. The biggest challenge at the moment is the cooling system because it's running a bit warm... We've flushed the system a few times but it's still full of dirty rust.. Going for a more intensive method next to get it properly cleared in the next few days The fan switch didn't work and I got a new one fitted today. We tested the thermostat too, and it had its wax on the OUTSIDE. New one of those went in as well. And the bloody alternator belt.. I seem to struggle with maintaining tension when tightening the adjuster. I'll have a another go with a breaker bar when I'm next under the bonnet. Pictures? I know. We need more of those too. I'll get some up to date ones up ASAP

Fiesta belts are sods to get tension! Or at least to get em stop slipping, is it a new belt? Sometimes old ones dry out and it knackeres em They look fine, but never grip, i also stick a crowbar in there too to hold it while i tighten it.

Fiesta belts are sods to get tension! Or at least to get em stop slipping, is it a new belt? Sometimes old ones dry out and it knackeres em They look fine, but never grip, I also stick a crowbar in there too to hold it while I tighten it. Old, but healthy looking belt. I've had another go at adjusting it but I don't know if it will be tight enough. If not, then I'll throw a new one on, it's not like they break the bank Cooling system hasn't really been living up to its name and there was quite a list of little faults. The process reads thus.. 'Hmm, gets a bit hot, fan doesn't come on. Bet that's the fan switch' so we buy one but don't get around to fitting it until... Phone call comes through from Bec saying it's running really hot. I suggest bridging the fan switch wires until she gets to mine. 'whilst I'm here I'll check the thermostat' which had wax on the OUTSIDE of it and unsurprisingly didn't open. So we buy another at Halfords and throw that in.. Fast forward a week or so and I'm going to Area 52 for the weekend and decide to borrow the Fiesta to get a bit of work done. Following a suggestion from Bruce, steradent tablets we used to dislodge the rust in the coolant and everything was flushed multiple times. I tested the new thermostat based on a hunch and found it not to work. Typical Halfords Fortunately a scrapper at A52 yielded something suitable. After refilling the system and running it to temp, Rich (Fox McIntyre) points out that my hoses are squidgy and the system seemingly isn't pressurised. Back to Halfords for a rad cap! Wiring on the fan switch had developed a fault and so was rewired direct to battery with an inline fuse. What a pain in the hole. On the plus side, it now runs to the correct temp, which is nice. But does still get hot when sat in traffic, which isn't ideal, especially since the fan kicks in at a really high temp. Any suggestions are more than welcome... Sorry, I'm being rubbish with pics. Have one I stole from Butterz'

get a thermostat from an xr2 that will kick the fan in earlier i think.

but surely it's dictated by the switch, not the thermostat? As far as I can tell, any thermostat would long have been wide open before the fan switch kicks in.. Unless you meant an XR2 fan switch operates at a lower temp, in which case that's most useful to know, thanks

Well, I haven't posted in a while so thought I would update. Everything seems to be going okay apart from a few minor bits.. interior dash lights don't appear to work at night, the alarm doesn't 'beep' and the interior fan has appeared to have stopped working! Never mind... minor issues! Went to Lyme Regis today with Ben and we took a few snaps.... *thumbs up*

Looking good!
well if the dash lights on a mk1 are anything like a mk2, they are pants! I tent to guess or wait til just that right point u're passing under a street light to catch a glimps of the gauges! lol Or carry a torch, there is a mod to fix it, i just cant be bothered to take the clocks out.
Did u sort the temp issues out? I cant remember what the wiring plug is like on a mk1, but i got a mk2 1.1 fan switch in mine, kicks in and out lovely, i also use a mk1 xr2 'stat. (My car is a hodge bodge of cooling system parts but all come together quite well i must say)

(My car is a hodge bodge of cooling system parts but all come together quite well I must say) Cooling issues are largely sorted. It's spot on in general driving but does still get hot when sat and the fan doesn't kick in until far too late. I think the 'stat may be opening too slow to get the switch hot. I think we'll probably put another one in since the one in there was 'borrowed' from a scrap car and although works, may be on its way out. I had a choice of two fan switches at the motorfactors, so I chose the on which had spade connectors (same as the old one). EDIT: That pic above with me driving.. Was shown because the car induces such levels of mirth whenever it is driven ;D /

It's certainly a possibility, John. The adjustable switch on the Kenlowe in my Volvo is excellent, but I can't help but feel that taking that step would just be an attempt to mask a problem rather than fix it; because everything is totally stock, there's no reason why it should ever get that hot really.
So I can make a comparison, how far should a 'stat open if dropped in boiling water? Thinking about it, the one in there at the moment opened, but it didn't seem especially WIDE open.

I think your problem is the fan switch, not the thermostat.
If the coolant really is getting hot (i.e. you are trusting the temp gauge to tell the truth) then the fan switch should put the fan on; end of story. Hot coolant = fan on (whatever the thermostat is doing or not doing).
Some ideas:
- Run it for a few days with the thermostat removed completely; see what happens. If it's slow to warm up, but still eventaullly gets itself hot in traffic, then the stat is not the problem
- Remove the fan switch and clean it up. Ensure there is no curse word around it inside the radiator. That would "isulate" it and make it turn the fan on late
- Test the temp guage sender, wire it up and put it a cup of boiling water and check the guage reading
Cheers
John

The fan switch is on top of the thermostat housing though, so would only come into contact with hot coolant once the thermostat is open. I may pull the thermostat for a day or two anyway, just to see how it reacts, and that's a good call on the temp gauge sender, I never even considered that it could be that inaccurate. Same test should work equally well on the fan switch, whilst I'm at it.
