Took my MK2 cortina for its test this morning - it passed, no advisories ;D
That's not the shock though. While I was chatting to the tester (about MoT related things) he asked me if I ever considered taking the test, which confused me for a sec, I've had a driving licence over 20 years, lol... He meant the VOSA tester's exam. Turns out he needs a part-time MoT tester (mainly to cover holidays/busy periods etc), his mechanic isn't interested, would I consider it?
I said I'd think about it. Thing is, the more I think, the more it seems like a good idea. MoT testing licence is a very useful thing to have ;D
Anyone got any thoughts? What's the test actually like?

I know a few people who do MOTing. Well, I would, right. One guy who went into it complains it is boring compared to "real" mechanicing. car comes in, do test, car goes out, do paperwork on computer, car comes in...
But solid extra income you cannot go wrong

For some reason I thought you already had an MoT license. So, instead of me going through all the trouble of remembering that you don't, I think you should get it! ;D It's definitely a handy thing to have, in my opinion! I suppose there are down sides, like people expecting you to go easy and let things slide because you know them or whatever, but an MoT license has got to be a good thing!

Well, people are always going to need MOTs... As said above really, steady extra income is always handy.

MOT tester = WIN!
Do it Andy. A friend of mine became a tester a few years back. His passion is mechanics, but in the current climate with people spending less on their cars he's so glad he did because the MOT side of things has really kept him going. MOT = bread & butter income. How much is the test? Would this guy be willing to pay for it if you are going to be helping him out??

To take the test you have to be sponsored by (or own) a MoT station - That's what always stopped me before and yes, offer is to sponsor me through the tests if I will help him out (for pay..) Think I'll be saying yes, anyway ;D

Do It. My mate has worked in franchise garages for years and recently they sponsored him to become an mot tester and hasnt looked back. In fact he just changed jobs even more recently, presumably as he can now command more money for it. No brainer question I would have thought

I think that it is a really good idea SOC, as others have stated, it is guaranteed income even through lean times!
Also, one hell of a feather in your cap to have this and it is a skill that you can take anywhere in the country if required!
Go for it!

On the face of it it sounds a no brainer as long as the income it would generate is equal to or greater than what you earn on your own time...
there's a few issues i'd want to be sure of.... mainly once you've got the ticket, what are the conditions, can you take it with you? is there a 'probation' period? do you have to do referesher courses? if you don't use it for a period of time does it lapse...
all things to consider...

ive been out of mechanics for a while now but when i did the mot testers course i had to be nominated by the garage i worked for, have a couple of mechanical/electrical qualifications (though i beleive there are ways around this)
we had a day at the ministry hgv testing station where we had a 1 day course which was basic vehicle structure and safety, after passing that a chap from the ministry came to our garage to veiw me doing a test, and ask general questions about testing equipment, fairly simple and a good thing to have ;D

have a couple of mechanical/electrical qualifications (though I beleive there are ways around this) There must be. My mate was in car sales until he realised he could just buy a garage business instead, still sell cars, but fix them up cheap and get steady MOT business. Him and his brother have been testing all mine ever since. As already said SOC - go for it. Another string to your bow in this climate is no bad thing. I like the idea of those MOT only businesses too. There's a future in those I reckon, though you'd barely be using your skills if you in particular went that route.
