To take the test you have to be sponsored by (or own) a MoT station - That's what always stopped me before and yes, offer is to sponsor me through the tests if I will help him out (for pay..) A mate has a small car repair workshop and his local MOT station sponsored him to do MOT's at their place. Only downside is they charge full price for MOT's, our other local test station normally has offers. Mate takes "borderline" cars to his sponsors place, anything "new" goes for the cut-price MOT. Seems to be working for him but I think his sponsors would like to see him more often (as he's normally working at his place) Not sure if you need to do so many a year to keep your ticket?

Even if it is a bit "boring" still sounds like a great opportunity, and part time/as and when should make it unboring. Go for it. Sounds like you've just generated so much extra trade he'll need you this weekend!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

is a good idea but as pointed out already your license expires and pretty damn quick too.
my dad happened upon the same thing after he took early retirement around 2007ish, couple local stations he was all matey with needed extra hands to do odd tests here and there. ideal for him as it covers his mucking with car costs doing a few hours here and there.
got his test sorted all good until recession and scrappage hit the places he was working at, all the full time mechanics and the like were put in to do the tests so my dad didnt need to take up any slack so to speak. that plus he'd rather spend his retirement time with a crossword and drinking beer meant his MOT license has lapsed and hell probably have to retake it in some form to do mots again.
how long to lapse? i believe it was 30 days. easily done.
just something to keep in mind.

You have to do a 'quality control' test once a month, but if that's all you do it doesn't matter. That's where the authorized examiner will watch the nominated tester (i.e. you) do a test and send it down the computer that you're doing your job. Getting started is now a three day course I think since they brought in computerization, followed by them coming out to watch you do a test within a month (I think) of you passing the course. Pass that and you're ready to start testing . After that it's just a two day refresher course every 5 years and the ministry randomly turning up to watch you do a test

Mechanic's rule #1... If the car works, anything left on the floor after you finished wasn't needed in the first place

^ good point, but most of that is stuff I have to deal with anyway. I'm starting to like the idea of just inspecting stuff its someone else's problem to fix too. And what, vosa might check up on me once a month to make sure I'm doing it properly? Lol. That beats working in a call centre or McDonalds for sure. Right now, it's some part time casual work with a bonus qualification. The way the motor trade seems to be headed, MoT work may eventually be all that is left so qualifying to do it seems a sensible step.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

:)I've been in the trade 22 years and have been an MOT tester for 11 years. Becoming an MOT tester is probably the best thing [work related] that I ever did. There are downsides. You will get "mates" expecting you to issue a pass certiicate when their car doesn't meet the requirements. You'll get the odd customer offering "a drink" for a pass. Those people frankly need telling to f**k off because you really don't want VOSA on your back. Derek,Mavis and their 4 kids will bring in their 25 year old Volvo for an MOT the day before their holiday in Great Yarmouth and make you feel guilty when their holiday is ruined because you failed their car. VOSA staff are mostly OK, but you will find the odd one that appears to "be out to get you". If you regularly do a lot of MOT tests they get boring, especially if you work for a main dealer or a main dealer brings their customers cars to you so you end up doing 7 of the same model of car a day!! I personally get quite a diverse range of cars to test so I don't get bored! The good points outweigh the bad points though. I think any independent garage that doesn't do MOT tests these days are really going to struggle. Go for it!

Ive also been in the trade 24 years & a tester for 15 years & i agree with everything that daverapid has said & for the last year ive been just a full time mot tester with a 1 man testing lane so i'm on my own with no assistant to keep an eye on & i thought doing tests full time & not occasionally when i was a mechanic/tester would drive me round the bend but it has'nt so far & i'd say go for it & get your license!
