It's definitely easier if you have access to a trailer. Rock up to the recycler's weighbridge, get the towcar, trailer and scrap weighed. Have them lift it off (and that can be the fun part). Back to the weighbridge with the towcar and empty trailer, and they pay you the going rate for the weight difference. You'll probably get shafted if someone comes and collects it, hence the 'scrap cars lifted for free' small ads in the local papers. And if you leave the interior in make sure the seats are a little damp.... like hose it down as water is heavy. Same with the petrol tank. ;D Its all money.

Right, my question... I've seen quite a few American muscle cars usually in matt paint with a bomb graphic on the side of it. What is the significance of the graphic? Is it a club, or some other group? Or a certain tuning part on it? Thank you and... And if you leave the interior in make sure the seats are a little damp.... like hose it down as water is heavy. Second hand steering wheel locks such as Disklok and other brands: Good idea or bad idea?
I've been considering grabbing a second-hand device, but I'm wondering if there's some reason I shouldn't.

The full cover Disclok's are good. The bar type make it easier rather than harder to nick as you can use them as a lever to snap the steering lock, then either saw through the wheel or pop the screen and drive.

Why don't parents understand "tinkering" when they were probably doing the same at our age? 'cos they didn't have a choice: for the most part, we do...

Heya!
Thought best to stick this on here, as seems a daft-ish question.
Am about to buy another Land Rover, one that was converted from Diesel to Petrol, using standard Land Rover engines.
However it's still registered as Diesel. My question is when I send the V5 off with change of owner details I want to change the fuel type to petrol.
Do I have to supply an engine number to the DVLA with the change on it?
Only reason I ask is I do not know where the engine has come from, whether that Land Rover has been registered as having an engine change or not

They do usually want an engine number, whether you inform them or not is up to you, it could be a pain in the now to do it, or a pain later if your forced to get it sorted in a hurry, if you end up with an emission zone like London has up your way for instance you might find it needs to be corrected.

Another one: how do you determine the right tire pressure?
I have a DAF and a Mercedes that came from the factory on skinny crossplies, and are now running wider steels on much wider tires. You'd think that the increased surface area from the wider tires would actually dictate a lower pressure, but pumping them up to the 1.7 bar the manual says leaves them very much underinflated....

The tyre manufacturer should have a recommended range for the tyre and may even be able to give you a starting point if you know the load (cars weight divided by 4 will be close enough in most cases).
I did once see a formula online somewhere but when i tested it with my own car and its known pressures it was way out.
Failing that, pump them up until they look right then do some careful test driving.

What does a diesel engine rev counter measure to display revs? More specifically can a petrol engine rev counter measuring voltage or current pulses be adapted to measure something off a diesel engine and if so what?
Thank you

Iirc, diesel rev counters usually work off the alternator.

Offset...
If I have a car which requires ET45ish, and then add some adapters to change the PCD to a more common flavour, it'll be the same as adding a 20mm spacer. I know it depends on the look I was going for, but to keep it simple and stock-ish, does this make the car need ET25ish or ET65ish?

What causes a tyre bunkle? Do you mean like an egg in the sidewal ? It's when the inner membrane. that's intended to hold the air in a tubeless tyre, is compromised and the air is finding it's way into the carcass/structure of the tyre. Usually caused by a puncture or when the tyre has been run on while flat. Offset... Car-related question : does the expression 'knock-off' (as in 'not genuine') comes from the fake knock-off hubcaps that used to be on 'Vettes and others in the 50's-60's?

Why is cam duration calculated in degrees of lift?? In simple terms - A cam's duration, ie how long it keeps the valves open is measured in degrees, a cam's lift is how much the cam lifts the valves and is measured in mm or inches. Right, my question... I've seen quite a few American muscle cars usually in matt paint with a bomb graphic on the side of it. What is the significance of the graphic? Is it a club, or some other group? Or a certain tuning part on it? Thank you It originated from the hot rod scene, like everything else. Soldiers came home from ww2 and built hot rods, and wanted to show off that they served in the air force, or just liked the graphics on ww2 bomb planes. Offset... It can take a while to grasp offset, or more to the point, where the wheel goes if you choose a different offset.
