why isnt life like the 60s nowerdays? people climbing into strangers cars, roaming the streets all night without being raped or mugged, ripping axles off of cop cars and cheesy gangs with logo jackets. awesome

the only retro ride i need is the yellow ford.
interesting facts about the movie:
The film's budget was exactly $777,777.77, and it was delivered on time - and on budget.
Harrison Ford was asked to cut his hair for the film. He refused, stating that his role was too short, and offered to wear a hat instead.
The Ford Coupe driven by Paul Le Mat's character had a 1966 Chevrolet 327 cu.in. engine. The black 1955 Chevy driven by Harrison Ford had a Chevrolet 454 cu.in. engine capable of doing 11-second quarter-mile times.
The scene after the drag race in which John admits to Terry that he was losing when Falfa's car lost control and rolled was improvised by Paul Le Mat and Charles Martin Smith. They had not had time to prepare for that scene, as it had been scheduled to be shot at another time.
Two cameras were used simultaneously in scenes involving conversations between actors in different cars. This resulted in significant production time savings.
The Douglas DC-7 airplane, shown at the end of the movie was previously owned by the rock group Grand Funk Railroad.
The film was shot in sequence, so as filming went on and the actors grew tired from the shooting schedule, the characters they played would also look more and more tired as the night went on.

The final drag race scene can still set fire to my spine... Wasn't it George Lucas's directorial debut? It would explain why he's always sporting a semi-quiff and a check shirt. Goes to show you should never knock the rock. I remember staying up late one night, watching it, then heading out to the garage and lowering my first car, then going out for mid-summer 5am blast when the work was done... Trouble is I live in Somerset, and the first car was a 2CV... Not quite the hero car was it? Ho hum

Thats the film that got me into cars. I even like the second one...
more trivia:
-License plate on John Milner's car is "THX-138". THX 1138 (1971) is a film also directed by George Lucas
-The '55 Chevy Bob Falfa drove is the same '55 Chevy used in the movie Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)
-They actually used 3 1955 Chevrolets in the film: the "hot rod" version that is seen the most, a car for interior camera shots, and one for the rollover after the drag race. Both the "hot rod" '55 and the 1932 Ford coupe were bought from the studio by an individual in Overland Park, Kansas in the mid-1980's who restored them back to their movie appearance.
-When Charles Martin Smith pulls up on the Vespa in the beginning, his crash into the building wasn't scripted. He genuinely lost control of the bike, and Lucas kept the cameras rolling
-Filmed in 29 days

Curt, who went off to collage is now played by Arther Garfunkle, (yes, that is the Arther Garfunkle, later to be known as Art and start a band with a fella called Paul Simon), he's involed with the hippy lot and burns his draft. Toads g/f is un uber-hippy who hooks up with a band. Harrison ford has another camio as a police officer. No really a car film, but i enjoy it.

tommyg in da house: The '55 Chevy Bob Falfa droveThat was always my fave car in that movie, in the late 80's I found a 55 two-ten and built it as close to a "replica" of the Bob Falfa/Harrison Ford 55 street racer, I used the Ertl 1:18 scale 32080 car to go by, even got the skull hanging in the window right. The car was later sold to a "Movie Junkie" in Palm Springs who had a bunch of Movie Cars & Replicas, the CROWN in his collection was a real Batmobile....

American Graffiti is one of my favourite films of all time, not a great deal actually happens in it - but I can sit back, relax (with a beer or two) And watch it over & over Milner's 32 looks just sooo right where many coupe rods just miss the mark somehow? I must admit to hankering after a similar Rod too, i'd feel so cool driving around with me tight T-shirt on, arm out the narrow window with my Marlboros folded into the sleeve - except I'd actually look like a right 'kn*b' P.S; Wasn't 'THX' the early form of surround-sound developed by George Lucas's company?

Strangley, I've perusing the peer 2 peer networks looking for Vanishing point Two Lane Blacktop American Graffiti California Kid And all three Mad Max movies I'm planning on having a car nutathon DVD fest. I can't believe how long since I've seen American Graffiti or California Kid.
I want to try and find a copy of the film "Grand Theft Auto" from the 70's too. Duel was good (Dennis Weaver and a truck), but I remember a film like that, might have been called "The Car" about a big US motor that is following a couple trying to kill them, ended with it going off a cliff and exploding with a demon face in the smoke.
