I saw an interesting factlet the other day, thought it might be of some vague interest.
The US has released details of who traded what in for what under their CARS scheme (like our Scrappage)
According to government figures 83% of vehicles traded for scrap allowances were trucks (including SUVs and offroaders). The most popular were the Ford F150, Dodge Ram and the Jeep Cherokee. [edit: should that be the most UNpopular? LOL]
The most popular vehicles bought under CARS schemes were Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus and Honda Insight.
I don't think I have a "point" to make here, I just thought it was interesting.
I think California had the highest number of trades and Ohio had the lowest. If anyone cares.

I would say California probly makes the biggest song and dance about the ecology, and don't know, but could that mean they give bigger incentives?
Also. the F150 has been the biggest seller in USA for yonks, so there is maybe a lot more of them proportional to other things being 'scrappaged'.
Obviously, with all the maybes, problys and possiblys in this reply, its all conjecture. I think its an interesting subject tho.
I'd be curious to read the same figures for the uk. (Most popular scrappage? I'd guess Ford Escort. Most popular car bought? Fiesta? Or Corsa. Or Toyota Aygo. )

Totally hasnt helped the american car industry then if its all Focus, Honda and corrollas being bought up. They might as well have shot them selves in the foot really.

Could it be the Americans are getting into safety? from what i heard trucks don't have to comply with the same crash regs as cars do and pickups are known to injure the occupants in bad crashes.

nope, i think americans are slowly realising that they don't need a 300bhp SUV/truck/pony car to go to work, the shop, or take the kids to wherever

I was minded when typing that list that the top three scrappers reads like the "best selling cars 2002" list (although Chevy pickup is notable by its absence on that list and it outsold the Dodge Ram and the Jeep). Chevy's Cobalt was #4 or #5. The Corolla, Focus and even I think the Insight are all built in the USA so it helped local jobs, local car dealer jobs, etc. if nothing else. You don't need Anything more than a Perodua Nippa to commute. Whats life about "need". I own 5 cars. 4 more than I need. I commute in a Lexus. I don't need. Getting into a "what you need thing is kinda dangerous... 300 BHP is only for starters....

To me those figures prove the real motive behind the incentive is punishment. This isn't about Americans realising they don't need a 300bhp SUV/truck/pony car it's about them (like us) realising that they are going to be constantly punished for having one. Punished at the petrol pumps, punished by the government, punished by the media and punished by the rest of society.
Environmentalism is the new religion, you're either seen as in or out and your choice of car is now what you wear around your neck.
Time to trade in that trusty old F150 and cash the American dream in for a new Focus. Who cares about practicality and passion, it's now all about being accepted.

I am with you on that MWF, it is the way our society seems to work, jumping from subjuct to subject (mad dogs, phone radiation, flu, etc. A witch hunt, followed by a whole load of decisions , (and maybe laws) Usually no better off in the end, but by doing so created lots of work and jobs:0 LOL. Scrapage will only work on an enviromental level if real scrap/worst polluting etc goes first.......we all know this, but it gets turned into an excuse to but new..."cos this one is better. The sheep follow. On a different note, I live in a street of new-ish cars, our daily wheels are the landy and volvo, both 49 yrs old, and we get a lot of respect from others, especially when they are no worse than theirs and lasted 3 times longer!

I don't care how eco friendly everyone else gets, it just makes Jags cheaper to buy if no one else wants them.

Well it does seem that the jury is still out in terms of the true benefit of scraping old cars for new ones and even the true impact humans have on global warming full stop.
However to me this is all beside the point.
What I want is freedom to make my own choice, and by that I mean true freedom to chose. Not this pseudo freedom we have now, where I can choose drive a big petrol powered car if I pay the 'penalties' of high fuel tax, high road tax, congestion charges, being singled out as a bad person and not take the financial and social benefits of the other choice.
People offering their F150's up for sacrifice and converting to the Focus way of life suggests to me that perhaps people feel they don't really have the choice to continue their chosen lifestyle.

It's the same as here. There's folk who run say a Mondeo or 5 series BMW who want a new car from the scrappage scheme because they want manufacturer warranty and all that stuff. When they come to select their new car they do so on it being the cheapest rather than the car they'd actually choose.
No-one under 70 buys a Hyundia i10 on Purpose.
I'm sure Mr Mondeo would rather be getting a brand new Mondeo but even with scrappage you're looking a £14k. Times are tight so he bites the bullet and gets a new Hyundai i10 or Fiat Panda for 5 grand .
I guess in the U.S it's the same. I'm sure F150 drivers would rather be getting a new F150 but I bet a Focus or Corolla is a damn sight cheaper.

MWF x 2. And you'll find one reason that the F150 is a perennial top-seller is precisely because it has a low base model price. Obv the new cars selected reflect the fact that the CashForClunkers criteria stipulated that the replacement vehicle had to have a high EPA mileage figure in order to qualify. So they COULDN'T freely choose a new F150 as a replacement , EVEN IF they wished to. Loaded dice. No free choice.

To qualify for the US "Cash for clunkers" scheme a vehicle had to be newer than 1989 and get less than 18mpg. A 1992 ford f150 or explorer is only worth maybe $1500 tops so when the government offers you $4500 for it alot of folks who wanted an new vehicle jumped at the chance.
IIRC our scrappage scheme pulled 25,000 Ford expeditions of the road and almost 50,000 Explorers. I celebrate the deaths of those, not because of any eco mindedness, just that they are ludicrous and terrible cars.
Compared to the insipid curse word that fills the automotive market around here the Focus is a nice, fun little car.

I've driven a Focus. Thats a damning statement. Mind you I've looked round a early 00's Malibu. Inspiring it was not. I kinda fancied an Excursion, just for the sheer stupidity value of it. Probably with some daft great diesel lump which belches black smoke when you nail it. I think they sold about 3 of them over here LOL. They were an official UK vehicle too, my local Ford dealer had a billboard for them. Imagine them parked up alongside the Ford Ka's and the like LOL.
