Perhaps I shouldn't have made such a sweeping statement, and Akku and Paul H clarified my meaning better. I still think it is good that there are safeguards in the scheme to stop classics getting junked, even if some apparently fall through the net, so to speak! It seems the UK and US schemes are very different animals. Exactly - there's no exemption for classic cars in the UK scheme. The oldest that I know of that have been traded in for scrappage have been early '50s..... One of them, a Riley RM, was certainly worth more than the £2k discount, even though it was very tatty. The current mood of finiancial despair probably has made people who would normally buy these cars for 2k+ a bit more wary. Sadly, a car is only worth what someone will pay for it. The whole thing is bonkers though...i don't get how someone can be in a situation where they have (for example) that Riley, and then want a new car...pretty much worthless mid 90's cars i can see where that would happen, but with classic stuff it doesnt make sense!

99.9 percent of the cars that were "killed" in the US CFC program are exactly the same cars that fill every used car dealership in the country. There is no loss to mourn here. Taurus', Intrepids, Explorers, and other midsize pap.
If you really want an dynasty, and I really have no idea why you would you could probably buy the niceset one in the US for under a grand. .. . . .
OK I just checked KBB the value for a good condition 1992 dynasty is $1050 meaning you would get about $400 for it on a trade in. Who in their right mind wouldnt accept 4 grand for it on the trade in of a toyota or focus or kia or whatever that is superior in every way.
don't you worry. The US is still chock full of terrible 90's cars.
I cant wait for the houshold appliances scheme to start. I wonder if all the folks complaining about cash for clunkers will get as angry over the loss 20 year old Maytag washing machines.

The main reason to get a Dodge Dynasty would be to drive around playing a cassette of the theme tune to Dynasty, whilst imagining stock footage of skyscrapers and oil fields, etc. Plus I like the big headlights and the slabby C-pillar.

Wow, this thread nimbly avoided descenting into rants about the scrappage scheme killing classics, only to stumble into that other old thread-locking topic, Climate Change TM. But either side of the Atlantic, there are still HEAPS of cars to keep us all busy for many lifetimes. It's sad that good cars are going to waste but hey! Their ride, their way. Even if their way is sacrificing their car on the altar of the new religion to buy themselves out of guilt.

Environmentalism is the new religion, you're either seen as in or out and your choice of car is now what you wear around your neck. Its not to those who know what they are talking about... I apologise if it sounded like I was dismissing cars impact on global warming. I wasn't trying to imply that. I was actually acknowledging your point that people are being priced out of buying the new cars they want by political and social agendas. And I do respect (and benefit directly) from the boost to the industry, particularly in North America.

Well, in terms of the Scrappage Scheme, then its probably pretty negligible after you have built a new one and shipped it from china, so dismiss away...i'll try not to be a pretentious in the future :-)
