Whilst trying to defrost myself after a rather frosty day at Area 52. The Wife excitedly told me she now wants to sell her SLK and buy something a bit more pratical. The Girl has good taste, she wants a Merc G Wagon! Ideally in black, with black wheels! ;D Thing is don't know a huge amount about them other than they are supposedly very reliable and tuffty, done some searching and found some very complimentary reviews but was wondering if anyone on here had some experience of them? I can confirm my girl has expensive tastes!! Have some Gelandewagens! Any responses appreciated, Fankyoo James

I don't know much about them apart from from them now being popular with Footballers. They haven't really changed at all since they came out and they have a good reputation for being tough and hard wearing. They are very expensive, even 30 year old ones, though I don't think they lose much money over time, unlike a Range Rover. But maybe finding a new misses would be cheaper? ;D

a mate of mine has one - it's a 1987 model and has spent it's whole life being abused on a farm and pulling ridiculous heavy trailers all over Europe and apart from the seats being a bit worn you would never know it has done 300k miles - he swears by it and thinks it's fantastic. Not the fastest or most comfortable vehicle compared to a Range Rover but probably a lot tougher.

Currently driving a Renault Wind Gordini as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

Built as tough as the preverbial brick out-house, originally designed for the military I believe. There's probably very little in the way of spare parts that you can't get from MB for them.
From my limited personal experience they're as good off-road as a Landie and a tad more comfortable on road (experience is some 20 years ago now though!). Diesels are not very economical, especially if you're used to driving a modern turbo-diesel saloon.

I have been frankly stunned by the price range, they are anything from affordable to nearly 100k. However it seems we could afford a early 90's for reasonable money.
It seems the reason for the expense is the fact that they are "apparently" hand built.
We found a company in Berkshire that specialises in them so going to trott along and get her to try one out - think she is going to find it very agricultural compared to the SLK.
Having done some searching I was expecting to get some dirt, find out that they were rusty / scary maintenence but nothing! Seems they don't depreciate either!

I'm also liking the wing top winkers They do seem to be a timeless piece of design, can't see you losing moneys on a nice one if you can afford it in the first place. You could be right about the agriculturalness, it's an aquired taste

Well you walk right back in there and announce to the little woman that you want a 50,000 quid vehicle too. See where that all goes. Maybe you'll get a Pooch 997 out of the deal.

we call them "Unimog Sport" ;D Very very expensive even when old, but a well built thing.... check out for rust, as the older ones really start to rust heavy .... some parts are really expensive (exhaust, fuel tank etc.) , the interior on the older ones is very basic, hence the nickname....

As Jürgen says watch out for rust - the engines are from the cars so bits are easy to get - petrol engined ones drink fuel like it´s going out of fashion, diesel ones are not much better - they´re painfully slow unless you get the AMG version and despite that probably one of the best offroad cars ever My mate runs one and he´s been trying to kill it off for over twenty years but it still keeps on going no matter what he throws at it. I´d question using it daily in a city but that goes for all "Geländewagen"!

The few cheap ones I have seen have been astoundingly rotten. Last time I was in Aberdeen, the wee bodyshop up the road was basically rebuilding the entire lower 8 inches of one with his mig welder. They are superbly capable off road, but IMO the high purchase price, high running costs and comparatively low comfort level just doesnt make sense when there are so many decent alternatives.

I have mentioned other cheaper 4x4’s but she likes her Merc’s – as I said expensive taste.
I am going not mention it for a week or two and wait until she has taken her SLK out and see if she changes her mind about it.
She hasn’t taken the SLK out for a run since Christmas, especially since there has been snow on the ground so I think she is just getting the blues about not having a car she can use all the time.
I also she is starting to see the problem behind having a 2 seater, as if we need to pick anyone up, carry anything, then we end up using the daily and the SLK doesn’t get used. Also with the G wagon we could use it as a tow car and I could take the AE86 off the road so I don’t end up paying insurance and take on a car that only gets drive to a race track and back 10 times a year!
The idea is sell the SLK and she should have enough to buy a circa 5k G wagon and still have something left over, just depends on if wagons in that bracket are any good or borderline basket cases.
The G wagon wouldn’t be a daily, but could be used on and off during the week – we have a little hack about for the work run.
Seems that other than rust the wagon there isn’t much else to look for on these cars!
