One of the few 4x4's deserving of the 'proper off-roader' tag.
But sadly mostly used mainly as a popular fashion accessory tackling the tough smooth tarmac of the California beach fronts or NewYorks upper west side.
I know it's against the ethos here but you're not far off ML320 territory.

It is quite shocking what else you can get for similar money – but on the other hand it’s also quite a good thing, as they won’t ever really depreciate. As you say its ML money, but then that’s only because they have depreciated so badly, also doesn’t have the same cache.
I tried pushing towards a 70 series Landcruiser – telling her they look the same, and would be vastly less but she wasn’t having any of it …its amazing what a Merc badge can do to some people

Certainly look like they hold their value.
Clean short wheelbase Defenders got quite fashionable in California along with the G-Wagon for a while. Not sure if they carry the same appeal her. And I can understand not wanting to move away from Merc.
Would be worth driving one first though, might be like driving a tank compared to the SLK.

Good god, man. Get up off the floor and assert yourself. Are they grapes you're carrying in them pockets or raisins? Come now, don't go wobbly. March straight into the powder room and tell her you're not going to the Michael Bluble concert, you're going back to bowling night every Tuesday, and you're damned well going to get that 997 if she drives home in a GLWagonen. Then march out. Gawd's sake, fella. She only means it to be a trinket, so discuss it like one!

Hahahaha, it’s her money so she can spend it as she pleases! I won’t be telling her how to spend it; life’s to short not to do the things you want. TBH I can’t say I care, I quite like the idea of one. Stick a hitch on it and then I can drag my track car around rather than getting brain damage driving to the circuit!

;D OK, then! So there's "her money" and then "your money". So since you ain't interfering with "her money" choices, you have the green light to spend willynilly as you see fit with "your money" then! See? I'm all about your rights and privileges, mate. I really am on your side. Slip this concept in next time you have a lil' pillow talk, and then do the codicil to the pre-nup, and it'll all be tidy when that 997 "appears" in the buggy barn. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Esquire Norm

Someone I once knew served in the Falklands not long after the conflict. He told me that all the farmers there were driving them at the time. Why, had MB set up a dealership? No, the Argentinian army had bought a load of them which were then left all over the islands, keys in the ignition, when the Argentinians were defeated. So the farmers "liberated" them.

If its brand loyalty thats swaying you, why not get her an MB Trac? VERY exclusive in the home counties, those G's are ten a penny these days ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) On a more serious level, as has been pointed out already, get her to test drive one. Refinement is a word you can forget, and if you don't get one with leather I hope you enjoy tasteless interiors! They are exclusive mainly because (as an on-road 4x4) they are overpriced and overhyped - there are many much better options out there. Check out the Landcruiser, Amazon, Rangie, Patrol GR, etc you could get for the same money - worlds apart! Have a Trac...... ![](http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt282/joemortiboy/800px-MB_Trac1100.jpg) There's plenty of stuff about them over on www.difflock.com or for a slightly less balanced viewpoint you could always try the GWOC website!
